Bruce at Real - ha, ha, ha!

And I like Bruce, most of the time.

After World Cup, where he should have gotten a sniff from European club teams because we did so well, nada. From anyone, let alone Real.

    Not happening.

I'd be more impressed if he was even considered than if Mathis signed with Real as their lone striker.

    Shocked, actually.

They could have waited waited one more year. Ottmar Hitzfeld's contract at Bayern Munich ends then and he could have become the headman at Real.

Hitzfeld is only one of two individuals in history to have won Champions league titles with two separate teams (Borussia in 1997 and Bayern in 2001, with a near-miss with Bayern in 1999). And don't start that crap about his being German and not suitable for a Spanish side: Jupp Heynckes, another German, was the head coach for Real when they won the CL in May, 1998.

Queiroz was a technical advisor to the USSF. I don't know what's that meant.

No knock on the guy, but what has he exactly accomplished to deserve coaching the "world's greatest team?"

Does he have any hardware to his name?

Sure, VDB didn't have any either, but he was a caretaker manager that happnened to be successful and stayed on.

VDB was no caretaker... they hired him with confidence

He's done absolutely nothing to deserve to coach Real Madrid.

This must be a stop-gap for a season until the board has time to locate a coach of sufficient calibre... at least I hope this is the case.

After raining on their victory celebrations by firing their coach and captain the very next day, Real Madrid has acted quickly to fill the coaching vacancy by naming Carlos Queiroz as their new coach. Queiroz was Alex Ferguson's top
assistant last season and has been prasised by both Ferguson and the Manchester United players as playing an important role in United's success last season as he brought some new tactics to the team.

Queiroz is known for his tactical acumen, which was probably Vicente del Bosque's greatest weakness, so it'll be interesting to see how he manages his galaxy of stars now. Del Bosque was very good at man management and was very popular amongst Madrid's players.

But I agree that Queiroz doesn't have much club coaching experience at the top level apart from coaching Sporting Lisbon and being Ferguson's right hand man last year. Queiroz does have a lot of experience with national teams though.

Alex Ferguson was trying hard to keep Queiroz at Manchester but he knew that this was a job offer Queiroz couldn't turn down. I was thinking that Luis Figo was on his way out with the acquisition of Beckham but Figo was used in getting in touch with Queiroz (he was Figo's coach on portugal's U-20 team and they've remained friends over the years) so I think Figo will be staying on board. Queiroz' first job will be finding a replacement at the back for Fernando Hierro.

Nice move to cater to Beckham. Is it his team now? I wonder how Raul feels about hiring this coach.

It may also be at the behest of Figo, who has a history with CQ going back to Portugal's youth teams.

This move should keep Figo in Madrid for a while longer.

It will be easy Helguera, Pavon or Ruben.

At least that Florentino and Valdano finally sign the centerback that they didn't want to sign for Del Bosque. I think that without Hierro, they don't have other choice that sign a centerback, or maybe Geremi will play as centerback the next year.

Yeah, I thought this was the Arena to coach Real thread. My bad. And nobody really credits Rongen with the '99 win, I mean look at what he accomplished the very next year...

Edit: Actually, it was, until the threads were merged.

I believe they want now Diego Milito (Independiente, Argentina) as a replacement. They've spent way too much on atack-oriented players--it's time they spent some dough on some D, eh?
