The stakes are very low even for the decent matchups. 32 teams survive the group stage. Essentially 3 points will get you through, even in 3rd place.

I really don’t rate this dude. If Spurs pay 70-80 million they are idiots.

Mendy is a better defender than Carreras. Carreras is of a different profile.

    History would suggest otherwise.

I mean, I partly agree but that post is a tad dramatic. France x Norway isn't even the best game involving France, objectively speaking.

There should be at least 20 matches on that list if we're not being silly.

Except there has never been a 48 team World Cup in history, nor a round of 32 following the group stage

Simulations have calculated that you have 67% odds of getting though with 3 points in this format

Its the same idea as with 24 teams just times 2. Same % of teams advance, so there's no mystery in terms of the magic # of points you need to feel somewhat safe. It's 4.

Kimmich says that he was approached by Bayern telling him that if he would like to go they would make it happen, PSG were very interested, he spoke to Luis Enrique and their director multiple times, with both of them showing total commitment to him, and the "finances were crazy, like, really really crazy" but says at the end of the day he didn't want to allow that to influence his decision.

Seems like a typical Barca signing actually.

They have a bunch of players that briefly played for them that would make for good trivia questions, like Aubameyang, Aguero, Gundogan, and Depay, all on free or for cheap, and Nunez seems like not your typical Barca player but typical signing. Laporta been doing that for a while too, started with Davids and Larsson in his first term.

World Cups 86-94 had the same format with 24 teams. 4 out of 6 best 3rd place teams went through to R16.

Shame Yildiz isn’t a RW because this would have been a real target for us, especially from a struggling Juve.

But there’ll be no space for him at Madrid irrespective of either Vini or Mbappe leaving unless both do, which obviously won’t happen.

France v Senegal? France v Iraq? Eh, no thanks.

Name 20 more, I’d be curious if Curaçao v Ecuador makes the cut.

It’s hard to justify taking time out of my work day to watch any of these group matches.

Senegal is for sure at Norway's level.
So, then why did you pick England x Croatia? I assume its because its 2 standout teams from a group, both almost certain to advance.

If that's the bar, there are several similar encounters like Portugal v Colombia, Spain x Uruguay, NL v Japon, Argentina x Austria.

I'm not going to list 20 even though that would be easy af to do, because if you don't think France v Senegal is an interesting match then you're either glorifying the 32-team WCs of the past, not knowledgeable of teams outside Europe, or just don't care about the WC.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. Exactly the type of player we need upfront. Someone tireless and energetic, who can constantly create space and chances. Of course, the superficial casual will go "duh misses sitters duh", and since we're in the business of making that type happy, we will never ever go near him. Media narratives and stereotypical reputations above everything else.

    Same thing with him. Sigh

Eh, I'm more concerned about the other type of "typical Barca signing." Ya know, the:

    A. Horrific overpay, for a
    B. Guy who isn't an exact fit, and who
    C. Is bought for non-sporting reasons.

If I told you that Barca are actually linked to a guy who just scored a pathetic 6 non-PK goals in La Liga, and are seriously considering paying >150MM for the privilege, I'm sure it would bring a smile to most madridistas' lips.

As for Nunez, I'm pretty sure he can get to 6 non-PK goals in La Liga, and do it for less than a 150MM transfer fee. [shrugs]
