Good landing spot, squad has everything it takes to win, no pressure to actually do so, just being in the mix is good enough.

Why do I feel like Chelsea is a terrible place to go for Xabi? There aren’t many teams as quick with the sack trigger as Madrid, but Chelsea is one of them. Plus with the merry go round of players there, it just seems like a project with little chance at top success

They sacked the favorite to succeed Pep at City while he was “being in the mix.” Their expectations are very high

Given how far they have fallen, CL qualification could be enough in the first season. Then take the next step in season 2.

Enzo Maresca did exactly that, won the Club World Cup, and then was sacked while still in a CL position in the standings by January 1. Taking that “next step” is a very tall task

I don't think Maresca was sacked because of the results. The reports was he wanted a bigger role in transfer/squad management and was told to just be the coach, he gave that incredible interview then about how this has been the worst week of his life as a coach or something and the athletic reported that they felt "anybody halfway good could do the job", that's why they had parked Rosenior at their secondary club.

Apparently they are trying to do the same now wanting to hire Filipe Luis in Straßburg.

Sure, but Chelsea is still a club that if you’re not contending for the league title or CL by year 2, you’re not making it to the summer.

Floor is low at the moment so most managers would probably survive year 1, but I just don’t see the post-Abramovich project as one that buys the quality needed to win or having the patience needed for a manager to imprint on a squad full of constantly new players.

Who is the last manager to succeed after leaving Chelsea? Certainly none with this ownership group

If Brighton win their last two games and Liverpool fumbles brentford, Brighton could take 5th spot.

it would be funny if Liverpool are loosing and Man U just gift Brighton the win to see the Liverpool meltdown

Barca papers saying they are going for Joao Pedro. Not sure he will be on the market as he's started 30 PL games for Chelsea and scored 15 goals.

I think Liverpool would be a better fit..Chelsea is drowning in a poisonous culture, they don't do long-term coaches there either..

Agreed; Liverpool seems like a match made in heaven for him.

He's a legend there, has Wirtz to reunite with, and they will be getting rid of a lot dead-weight in the summer. Perfect opportunity to lay down the foundations for a winning team.

Carragher said Pool have never sacked a league winning coach in their history. And Slot won their 2nd league title since 1990. They are giving him another season to bounce back.

If they qualify for the UCL, they might. But I feel Slot is almost unanimously hated by the Kop, the players don't seem to like him either (typical of Dutch coaches).

I don't see any reason to keep him and miss out on Xabi other than sentiment.

They've apparently had talks with him and weren't too thrilled, would rather sign Iraola apparently if it's going to be a Spanish coach.

The current director and club manager are both out of contract next season. Timing wise it makes sense to go with the same coach next season and start from the beginning with a new director and a new coach.

I'm reading now from Ornstein that Liverpool have decided to stick with Slot next season.

“Alonso is not under consideration at Liverpool at all, and the Merseyside club fully intend to go into next season with Arne Slot as their head coach.”

Chelsea are considering Xabi, Iraola and Marco Silva.

What's weird is Michael Edwards the SD helped build Klopp's Liverpool famously suggesting Salah instead of Julian Brandt and pushed for VVD even with the high fee. He left came back and they have had a bizarre summer in the market.

I guess everyone has an expiry date. Look at Monchi.

We only hear the ones those guys get correct, and all the duds they sign go unnoticed/swept under the rug i feel. Klopp famously basically had tunnel vision for players that played against him, or he had on a team prior.

You'd think with every sport improving so much on finding the right players, football would've made progress but in general football transfers mostly don't work out.

Players have grown tired of Riera at Frankfurt. Burkardt scored last week and in response just flat out ran to insult him

The club fined Burkardt 20.000 euro for it. It wasn't supposed to become public information though, so Riera went on a tirade how leaks damage the relationship between him and the team and whatever.

Really one of the most spectacular topics in the Bundesliga this season. I wonder how he figures this got leaked, when Hammann, who works for Sky now said multiple players spoke with him about how they simply can't stand Riera.

Albert Riera did the same coaching class/license year that Xabi did and their coaching is pretty much the same. Long video sessions that Frankfurt players have at some point started not paying attention to or skipping altogether, weird hot and cold communication, "team favorites". Constant attempts to change players and "teach them".

His stint at Frankfurt feels so much like Xabi's at Madrid.

Liverpool is probably making the smart play by letting Xabi Alonso get a bit more experience. They know they'll always be favorites to get him if he becomes great.

I have now come to your side on this issue....we probably jumped the gun with him. Needed much more experience and a few more grey hairs before coming to Madrid (even if I think it was stupid to fire him the way we did).

An older/wiser Xabi would have probably known how to handle Florentino better.

Let's be real...you come to Madrid to coach the team, but if you don't know how to properly manage the boss, you have no chance of success.

The worst thing of the whole situation is how we backstabbed Carlo, a club legend, in order to justify sucking him to bring the, as @4x4s calls it, sexy choice of Xabi.

One thing I don't understand. If you want a disciplinarian, a guy that runs a hard program, you simply go with Conte who is every bit better than Mourinho and has been so for years. His game is faster, harder and more aggressive.

You could arguably call him the next step of the evolution of that prototype of coach that Mourinho was. But whenever he's mentioned, people say he'll fight with the players and cause chaos, then in the same breath say Mourinho will run a tight program and instill discipline, but how is that possible if you don't impose yourself on the players.

The old "trust me pal, I know how to win" trick doesn't work any more.

It really is a hire only Real Madrid could make. Just stuck in their way good and bad

I simply feel like they never really believed in Xabi, in a role as somebody that would be the catalyst of change and reform the way the way a lot of journalists believe. He got a lot of empty promises in terms of freedom, but not the kind of power he had at Leverkusen where the entire club is run by the person that personally hand picked him.

I feel like there were several red flags. The constant overpromissing. He was known to be incredibly boring in Leverkusen in front of the microphone to the point where it became a joke whether you need to attend or not, or you can just write your report based on the usual "we're playing a top opponent, every game is hard" stuff.
Suddenly he's in Madrid and starts talking rock n roll football, how he's going to deliver the football that will have people going wild after they leave the stadium. At one point he was trying to blend in the referee and Negreira stuff but it never felt comfortable.

I just think the relationship was wrong from the beginning. The fact that he stepped into the shoes of a coach this beloved and successful further crushed him as he dealt with a ton of internal pressure.

There was somebody on Cadena Ser the other day saying he spoke to him personally and Xabi admitted he never should have signed that deal.

    It's pretty simple.

Flo has a good personal relationship with Jose that would give him a longer leash than any other manager.

That is vital at this time seeing as how the club emasculates previous managers.
