La Liga kicks off tonight. Athletic Bilbao vs Getafe in couple of hours. Athletic Bilbao is a team I am interested in watching this season. Think they can go far in Europa League and continue to do well in La Liga. Haven't lost any key player and added Djalo from Braga.
I couldn't disagree more. The entire history of USMNT coaching has been American coaches that "know the American player." A history of crap and more crap with a bit of bigotry sprinkled in. We don't need coaches that know the US. We need a tactician and a manager that will raise expectations and standards. I don't think Poch is a world-class manager, but the USMNT is punching way above its weight getting him. How does he choose the US job over England when both are available? I have no idea how the Federation managed to convince him. Let's face it. The job isn't very attractive. While I believe it's the most talented pool of American players the national team has ever had, it's not close to being a competitive squad on the big international stages. The only perk I can imagine that is appealing is that the World Cup will be in the US in 2026. Realistic targets for the USMNT would have been MLS coaches, South American club coaches, or failed European coaches like Henry or Vieira. Poch is way above that level.
Good coaches can make average NTs punch above their weight. Hiddink did just that. Australia had only Cahill as known player. Iirc Italy won the knockout match 1-0 vs Australia thanks to a penalty won by diving. Italy went on to win that World Cup. So Hiddink made Australia compete well against the best. Also Oceania winner had to beat 5th best South American team to qualify for World Cup those days. So Australia qualified for the World Cup knocking out Forlan's Uruguay. Current US team has better talents than Hiddink's Australia imo plus home advantage for 2026 WC.
🚨🇵🇹 JUST IN: Atlético Madrid has rejected a €45m offer from Chelsea for João Félix. They want €60m for him. Atleti is very upset by how the English club handled the Samu Omorodion situation.[@rubenuria via @Objetivoatleti] pic.twitter.com/n6k0N6H2zW— Atletico Universe (@atletiuniverse) August 15, 2024
The transfer market has been pretty weird this window by the way. Players ready to sign suddenyl leaving the hotel and returning, deals called off at the final minute. I talked to somebody on the phone today and we speculated some kind of incoming rules/legal change that clubs are smelling coming and the contracts are created with protections that they didnt have before.
The game in question would be Barcelona's home game against Atleti for this season, so fair enough I guess in that regard, but they can only get away with it this time around because Barcelona's still not playing back in their home stadium. I'd be shocked if Barcelona or Real Madrid ever volunteered to give up a Camp Nou or Bernabéu game.
Padilla with a great save in his debut. Athletic probably found another competent GK with main two injured. 20 year old who chose Mexico U-23 NT recently as his mother is Mexican.
🚨 Federico Chiesa will no longer train with the first team at Juventus. He's been banished from the squad. ⛔️🇮🇹(Source: @GiovaAlbanese) pic.twitter.com/DwKLl4DKfk— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) August 15, 2024
Getafe's goalscorer tonight, Uche, cost previous club Ceuta €800 last summer. Cost Getafe €500k this summer, might cost €5m next year. https://t.co/W4TRwLUJzj— Ruairidh Barlow (@RuriBarlow) August 15, 2024 Jordi points out here that two years ago he was playing on pitches like this and putting up his own highlights on Instagram...You'll find me in the Peña Christantus Uche.https://t.co/38QEdweD0A— Ruairidh Barlow (@RuriBarlow) August 15, 2024
Misehouy scores on his debut. Nicely set up by Almena. 1-1. Avila hit the post soon after from an acrobatic effort.
(🌕) BREAKING: La Liga is working on hosting the Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid league match, which is set to take place on December 20, 21, or 22, in the United States. It would take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. @relevo #FCB 🇺🇸🚨— Reshad Rahman (@ReshadFCB) August 15, 2024
There was a time when Juventus couldn't keep clubs away from the guy now they can't give him away. Crazy world. Dybala also a player who had such a mediocre career
I think the Chimy Avila signing is a really interesting one for Betis, hit the post with a nice attempt last night. I think he’ll do well for them.
I really wonder what all the buzz about the new Manchester United Management was supposed to be about when they ended up just doing the same they've always done. Sign guys Ten Hag is familiar with at premium prices.
The Yoro move was very different as an example, what’s the last time Man United signed anyone who the rest of top European clubs wanted.
English journos now saying the same. 🔴📰 | Leny Yoro's medical scans showed a possible metatarsal issue when he joined #mufc last month.Executives pressed ahead with the signing anyway because they believed the 18-year-old defender would be a top player for them for the next decade.[@lauriewhitwell] pic.twitter.com/PfEhhvkrYA— UtdDistrict (@UtdDistrict) August 16, 2024 As reported first on @Transfersdotcom, PSG refused to sign Yoro for this very reason.Story reported by @jac_talbot 🫡https://t.co/NVbdMDaCWn https://t.co/bWZZZXTLSG— Robin Bairner (@RBairner) August 16, 2024
Utd signed Pogba, Di Maria at their peak. I'd say both are more high profile than Yoro. Issue under Glazers also was misfit managers and a lot of underwhelming signings to go with a few talented ones. Utd won't turn it around until they get a top class coach like Pool did with Klopp. I don't think Hag is the guy.
