I actually love the new format, it made the tournament unpredictable and teams can't hone in on the weak teams of their group and pick them apart for points. You have to focus on each game a lot more. It's a success as dar as im concerned.
The teams at the bottom of the inside playoff spots are Manchester City, PSV, and GNK Dinamo, each with 8 points. Just outside the playoff spots are PSG and Stuttgart, both with 7 points. In the upcoming matchday, PSG will face Manchester City, which could push one of these teams closer to elimination ahead of the final matchday. Meanwhile, PSV and Stuttgart, who are vying for a playoff spot, have relatively easier opponents on Match Day 7, allowing them to apply pressure on the loser of the PSG-Man City match. GNK Dinamo will be playing away against Arsenal. As for the seeded team for the playoff (l9th to 16th spot), the teams on the edge are Benfica and Monaco. Monaco will play against Aston Villa and Inter Milan while Benfica takes on Juventus and Barcelona. The Benfica-Juventus can help us to get inside the top 16 as Juventus is only one point ahead of Benfica. One of them can get knock out of the top 16.
I like that we play different teams throughout the entire group stage, rather than the same 3 teams home and away.
After the playoffs round (1/8 1/4 and 1/2) are the 1-8 teams has the home advantage 2nd leg or after the playoffs it will be decided by draw who host the 2nd leg ?
Yeah, i like that you have to adapt to a new situation with every game, it's not just spotting the weak team on the calendar, securing the points and then cruising. The football is much better.
How is this anywhere near an invitation only fixed League format where a handful of teams play each other? Florentino goofed on that, completely embarassed himself and the club.
You already know the invitation format changed. Can you now explain the idea of playing different opponents in the group stage not stolen from the Super League?
UEFA introduced the CL 24/25 model in May 2022, Florentino and the former RTL boss showed their model in November 2022. In fact their presentation compared it to UEFAs model. Unless we think Florentino invented the League model, Lague table, and everything. Florentino wanted to be a League boss after making his exit from Real Madrid, or having it potentially rotate like it used to with basketball, and it failed.
Florentino fumbled the super league HARD. I don't know if it's because of an echo chamber at the club, or if he was panicking due to the economic impact of covid, but that "presentation" on El Chiringuito was hard to watch. First of all that show does not have the proper format to present something as big as the rival competition to the CL. Second, the design of the studio made it seem even less legit, and Flo looked like a kid in preschool. Third, Flo was not comfortable at all, and maybe a spokesperson should have been employed. Ultimately, the original format was not attractive from a footballing fan's perspective. It was almost doomed from the start. I was still behind Flo, thinking there must've been more to the whole story and that he could pull it off, but the more time passed it was obvious that Flo and his people never really had a proper project. It seemed like a hastily put together "FU" to UEFA that never employed the right people to work on it, especially from a PR and marketing perspective. I guess that'll be an L, and we move on. The new CL music theme can drop dead tho
The different opponents and the level of quality of those opponents seems higher for sure in this format. I just don’t like that we’re likely going to be playing playoff league phase games prior to the Round of 16 all the way in February. 4 more games than the old format
He builds his team to a system and also does not allow much independence. Mikel also sets us up in this manner. Hence why one crucial player being out affects us directly (MØ and Rodri). But Pep really fumbled in the transfers in the summer. Even at the time Palmer leaving for Doku, a guy whom Hendrix22 vouched for daily, and selling Alvarez were serious mistakes.
If we're honest, following things haven't been discussed enough: The Premier League has improved while Manchester City stagnated. Teams have tried being innovative, try new things, some to more success, some to less, but Manchester City have signed the same profile of player from the same talent pool playing the same kind of (good) football. While that doesn't mean that they are past it, they have been massively humanized in the past 2 years. The movement around them has seen enough managerial and situational chaos to bring them out of their comfort zone just enough to rattle them. You can sort of link it to the great Barcelona team gradually become more and more human as time went on, without them really doing anything wrong.
I still think ageing midfield and having no DM is crux of their problems. Maybe there's player fatigue too after the intense pressing Pep system for several years. This happened to Dortmund and Kloop left after a season where they were mid table for a lot and eventually finished 7th.
Ive never seen a top manager fumble 7 out of 8 games. Did Ferguson, Mourinho, Ancelotti AND the likes ever loose 6 out of an 8 gane stretch? Ever? I cant think of a single instance. Anyone saying ITS down to not having rodri is basically just endorsing His BdO win.
It's OK to point out haven't seen any top team succeed without a DM. City literally had NONE after Rodri got injured. That might be worse than RM having Graverson and Pablo Garcia from 2004-06 without Makelele. Is it endorsing Makelele should have won BDR for three years straight? Let's not forget Pep tried to show his genius side playing without any DM in 2021 CL final and became a laughing stock for it 90 mins later.
City midfield yesterday was KDB, Gundogan and Silva. Two mid 30 guys on their last legs and Silva who has mostly played mostly RW for them and is no spring chicken either. If we had that midfield, I'd expect us to lose most La Liga away games even with a GK like Courtois. Nunes, Philips signings didn't work out and they probably should have spent big on a world class CM instead of Grealish.
