Man City 23/24 Scored 96 Goals and conceded 34 goals Real Madrid 23/24 Scored 87 goals conceded 26 goals. The 2 teams finished last in each league Sheffield United 23/24 conceded 104 goals Granda 23/24 conceded 79 goals
There are not enough good teams to justify having CL football on three days of a 5 day work week. Those are intertoto Cup tier teams getting a Champions League badge on their kit to justify them having prime television/streaming real estate. I was at a Bundesliga game the other day and the rain was just pouring and it was so cold that i had to ask myself, why are we paying for this? This isn't good enough football to justify this. The speakers were constantly blasting the same "family! we are on! we are together!" but are we really?
This is a ridiculous statistical comparison and i'm a stats/numbers guy. The team at the bottom of the Turkish Superlig conceded 80 goals, just one more than Granada, that doesn't mean they defend anywhere near as efficiently.
To justify what? €20-60? I'd beg to differ. Its over $200 for the cheapest seat for some MLS games. Football aside, have you seen the prices of other stuff that fall in the "entertainment" category? You can't see a second-rate music band for under $100 anymore. Similar price to watch the worst hockey team in the league from an average seat. A round of cocktails, which last 15 minutes, could easily run you well over €20, and when I say "round" I mean 2. At least UEFA put a cap on CL, EL, Conf League away ticket prices.
I never spoke about money. The point is that the interest in the sport is retained artificially, not by the quality of the football on display. If you sit down and think about how many great games you watched that you felt that was a great investment of your time, that amount is tiny. I can honestly say that a lot of Real Madrid games i wouldn't watch as a neutral which means my interest isn't being retained by the football itself.
You questioned why you are paying to watch. Anyway, there is little evidence to support what you are claiming. If anything, the evidence points in the other direction: fitter athletes, better playing conditions, better viewing conditions => better entertainment. I also don't understand why you find it surprising that having a vested interest in the outcome of a game makes it a lot more interesting to watch.
Small/medium Spanish teams usually get their ass beaten by English teams in European competitions. Sure, Spanish teams (mostly us and Sevilla, and Atleti for a while in EL) win more titles than English teams, but Spanish teams are poorer and naturally worse.
I'm saying without the emotional attachment to a club, the game is a terrible waste of time. We paid half of what we paid for the football tickets two days later to watch a movie and have a guy cook pasta right in front of us before. I wondered why the f*** I'd want to go to a football game. At least indoor sports present the comfort of a dry environment, heated or climatised. I remember a Schalke Fan from my old neighborhood, he absolutely hated the team but dragged his feet to go watch them, paid all the subscriptions and fees, this was an abusive relationship. It's clear were not talking about Barca, Madrid or Manchester City here. Hürzeler had a nice quote saying "if I want the pub for myself on a friday I ask them to put on the Union Berlin game and everybody leaves the place".
RM had a great defensive record last season and hence that GD despite not having great volume scorers. City did have a poor record against big teams last season while they dismantled the rest of the league.
They keep rolling over managers like it’s nothing, the problem is their squad is really the worst it’s been since I can remember.
Yea. Villarreal and Sevilla has had similar recruitment strategy for two decades. But Villarreal have been executing it much better than Sevilla in recent years. Also Villarreal had Emery and now Marcelino who's a competent coach.
Fair enough. I mean, I do agree in the sense that the term "The Beautiful Game" is just dead wrong and clearly thought up by people that barely watched the sport (its also a bit gay - not that there's anything wrong with that). And yeah.... watching a movie is one of the very few things that is cheaper. And, imo, its only worth the time and money if you limit yourself to the best movies (so you get back to the same issue again). I don't get the weather obsession. Usually stands in stadiums where it rains alot are covered. I can't recall ever having rain interfere with me trying to enjoy a match, and I've been to Liverpool in November.
It's mostly Barca that have underperformed in Europe from Spain. Villarreal in last 4 years won EL and reached CL semis beating rich teams like Utd, Bayern in those two campaigns.

I’m to lazy to do more searching. There’s more updated graphs out there. But this kinda gives an idea:
I think Sevilla definitely got it right to be fair at least with Mendilibar, who I do like, they had great success in Europe with him after he took over mid season and the first sign of poor form next season and he’s out! I think their current coach, Pimenta (sp?) was an interesting move as well, recruited from Las Palmas who were having a fine season last year until the towards end, I’d be curious how he does if given a full season. Neither are Emery of course however. I’d guess Luis Garcia (Alaves) will be next on their hit list of managers to give a quick go if Pimenta fails.
This is probably the weakest Sevilla squad in the last two decades though. Monchi signed several flops before leaving and his replacement hasn't done any better.
Barcelona have received just 4 red cards less (all time) in the CL than Real Madrid. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/history/rankings/teams/red_cards/ Here's something i noticed: Sergio Ramos has the most red cards in CL history, the most yellow cards in CL history, the most red cards in La Liga history, the most yellow cards in La Liga history. Any kind of disciplinary record we have, he tanked on his own. Send off 21 times in La Liga, an astonishing amount of 167 yellow cards, he leads by over 20 yellow cards. We would have been one of the better teams in fair play rankings without him
🔴 Arne Slot explains: "If I could have bought Martin Zubimendi, then maybe I could have rotated a bit more and the media would be a lot more happy about it!"."But there is no point talking about him as he stayed with Real Sociedad, we're so happy with Gravenberch". pic.twitter.com/njurhsTigr— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) September 21, 2024 Kind of an unlucky statement. We didn't get who I really wanted but the guy I don't want is fine too I guess
Sergio is a level on his own. It's fascinating to see how Barca is head and shoulders above anyone else in La Liga/ Copa whilst Madrid is almost always at the bottom even with similar success.
I don't trust those stats. Mainly because we have the number 1 and number 2 all time record yellow/red card collectors in Ramos and Hierro and nobody even comes close to them. They just make our stats look like a joke all on their own. Ramos has been sent off 24 times in his career, meaning he's 4 red cards short of the Premier League record, the Bundesliga record, AND the Serie A record holders put TOGETHER. If you remove those monster statistical outliers from out team, the stats balance themselves out extremely.
