Italy outplaying France. Mbappe coasting through the game. Good, keep your energy for when you come back.
Football is a weird game. Imagine being able to score in the first 15 seconds but not in the last 89:45.
Well, yeah... I don't think anyone is saying its easy from that standpoint. But there are different ways to assess whether something is difficult. Like I'd say scrubbing public toilets for 40 hours a week for shite pay is a difficult job, even though anyone can do it. Anyone who is lucky* enough to play football for a living chooses to do exactly that. Because choosing to do just about anything else results in a tougher life. * not suggesting its all down to luck, but luck certainly plays a part.
The doctor that saves a football players career earns in a year what the player might earn in 3 months. "if it's that easy do the ACL repair yourself hurrhuurduuurrhuurr"
Nobody said it was easy though. It's just that it's wildly over compensated at the level of those complaining. Players in the third division often work side jobs. Kroos has an influencer/Instagram league going, and there's even second division players leaving their clubs to play with streamers and Instagram models because it pays better. A guy that earns 18 mil. complains about playing 3 games a week, another one has to work a day job along with being a pro football player to survive. Around 70% of all football players in Europe enter poverty upon leaving the game. That's not because they waste their money, it's because under a certain level football isn't a great career financially. Clearly, somebody that has more cars than shoes needs to show a bit of humility.
Ireland Vs England tonight. I am pointing out the obvious to most, but in case you didn't realise, over here it's pretty common for people from one part of Britain or Ireland to have family from another part, and so many sportspeople here have to choose which nation to represent. For most I would assume it's pretty straight forward, but for some they start down one path then change their mind. We therefore sometimes see players who play for the under 21st for one of the nations then switch to another for the senior team. Declan Rice though played 3 full senior games for Ireland, talked up his love of playing for the country, even spoke about how he wants to be Ireland captain in the future, but because they were friendlies he was not tied to Ireland, and when England came calling he jumped ship. He is going to get so much abuse tonight
Grealish also played for their under 21s, so will get a bit of stick but only because Rice being there creates an atmosphere of booing someone who turned their back on you. If Rice wasn't playing then no one would care about Grealish playing for their youth team then switching to England's senior team. It's just not that unusual.
Do you think the new manager has empowered him to score more? It’s just weird he scored decently with Porto player very well with Klopp but finished poorly, was a work rate and football generation guy but not a lot of goals New guy comes in, more goals again I doubt it’s anything tactical other than telling him go for it. Diaz is a super humble soldier type of guy that just listens and does as he is told so maybe being empowered for attack instead of press helped him whatever it is, hope he keeps it up
Did not actually know that about Rice. A few years ago I was really thinking he could be a future England captain. Still could but he hasn’t really come on as I expected he would. He’s good but I think he’s at his top level, and seeing Jude take a step further than him just shows really what sets world class players apart from the rest.
Eh, when Brahim chose Morocco despite living his entire life as a Spanish citizen and playing for Spain people here celebrated. It's all a matter of perspective.
Not the same though and I wasn’t one of the ones celebrating but Brahim chose Morocco to have more opportunities of being called up and playing Rice chose England because it’s cooler
Rice chose England because it's a better team and it provides better career opportunities. Like Özil. International football is just another club at this point. It's as much of a passion project as pro wrestling is about real fighting. All the players we mentioned moved to a different team because it made sense career wise. Higuain was called up by France, Nico Paz played for Spain. It's just comedy.
To emphasise how common it is here for someone to qualify for another of what we call 'the home nations' I.e UK + Ireland, our 2 best players, Kane & Bellingham, both qualified to play for Ireland but chose England.
Musiala qualified for England (and played for England), but chose Germany, mostly because it felt practical.
Maybe I'm getting old but it feels like it wasn't that long ago that seeing a black player in a German NT kit wasn't that common. Not accusing German federation of racism but immigration or the pipeline of talent to the NT seems to have changed. I'm curious about how it happened.
