Mac didn't have an all-star season... so why is she taking over a starting spot on the South team? Easy... her Portland connection and her USWNT status... neither of which should factor in on the decision to pick a player. I know she has made wonderful contributions to the USWNT, but this is the WUSA all-star game, not a US soccer game. This is the statement after her name in the announcement: "F Shannon MacMillan San Diego USA's leading scorer in 2002 will start in place of Carolina's Birgit Prinz" Nothing about her 2002 WUSA season... just a word about her USWNT stats. The WUSA should name only those who deserve it... the ones that made incredible contributions to the 2002 WUSA season. Mac's a great player... but there are others more deserving of the all-star status... at least for this year. What do you Carolina folks think? Fotop didn't make the grade and had incredible #'s.
I think some of them are thinking that Fotop should rest her injured foot or leg or whatever ailment she has now. The south coaches probably would have picked Fotop if she was 100% healthy. No need to further aggravate her injury in a meaningless match. And where the ************ are my damn Gala tix?!!? I need to do some stalking next Thursday!!
I know. My point was...there are many more worthy players that could have taken her place. Mac shouldn't be starting.
The way that Mac was put into the starting lineup totally sucks. The process is bogus. The starters were selected by voting. If one of them can't play, they should be replaced by the player with the next highest number of votes. To have the replacement selected by the coaches and friggin' Tony DiCicco is a bunch of crap. The league is so transparent sometimes it isn't even funny. Of course Mac was selected for the "Portland connection" - on merit, there's no way she belongs in the starting line-up. In terms of marketing the game, she definately belongs in the starting line-up. So, in a way I agree with you; in a way I don't. I could be pissed about Fotop getting the shaft, but I'm not. Yea, Fotop had better numbers than Mac, but Mac can sell a lot more tickets in Portland than Fotop can. If the league wants to rig the AllStar starting line-up, I can live with that. What's hard for me to deal with is the fact that the Beat players and Courage players are on the same team. That just isn't right. We were just starting to get a good rivalry going and they put us on the same team. Idiots!!! The league just doesn't understand rivalry. I hope, some day, that the WUSA figures it out. It's the only way the league will survive.
I think you're overreacting. Just look at other leagues: In the NFL, Cowboys and Redskins players end up on the same all-star ("Pro Bowl") teams. In baseball, Orioles and Red Sox players end up on the same team with Yankees players. There's only so much you can do. Besides, isn't there a delicious irony to putting Charmaine Hooper in the position of accepting passes from Hege Riise?
A few years ago the Phoenix Mercury's Brandy Reed was added to the roster after the fans in Phx swore to wear all black, (in front of the cameras) when no one from the Mercury was chosen for the team and the game was being played in Phx. The fans banding together to protest, that's like voting with your clothes, better than voting with their feet and not showing up. That's not to say that Portland would or should have protested in black or in attendance, but I think it was a reasonable decision to include Mac in spite of her rather lackluster year. Also, in golf tournament qualifiers, they always leave a roster spot open for a local qual, to help with the crowd draw. What the WUSA did isn't that uncommon. Besides, Mac is a big name with a lot of PTH followers, it's not like it's some unknown no talent.
Well, isn't a good part of any All Star game based on "favorites", not necessarily "best"? Certainly anyone chosen should be good. Really good. "Stellar" even. However, it's an exhibition and should have as many players as the majority of people want to see, regardless of whether or not their season was spectacular. We all know that when Mac's game is on, she is pretty exciting to watch. A lot of what makes a game exciting to be at is when the crowd gets behind a player and starts screaming and cheering them on. Having Mac play on her home turf will certainly turn up the energy in the crowd. All of the players will have their own set of cheerleaders, so to speak and should make for a very entertaining, if meaningless, game. I think the South will win bragging rights with this one though. I sure as hell wish I was going to this one. Norma
I see the logic in her starting for marketing purposes, but I wish it wasn't a factor. For Mac to start in place of say, Hooper or Fotop... it seems a bit ridiculous... considering the #'s they put up this year. XYZ -----> As far as Carolina and Atlanta being on the same team... they are the two only teams realistically in the SOUTH!! This game will not interrupt nor compromise our rivalry... I think Carolina blows!! And I really don't like...Burt, Roberts, Fotop and Prinz... so worry about something that warrants it... we'll still hate your team when this is all over!!
