Friendly in Hudson: Portuguese club comes to town
By Jared Spinelli / News Sports Correspondent
    Saturday, August 7, 2004

In the mid-to-late 90s, Tony Frias was one of Hudson High School's standout soccer players. Frias went on to sign a contract with the New England Revolution and several Portuguese professional soccer teams following graduation.

Tonight, Frias returns to Hudson as a member of Sport Club Lusitania, a team in Portugal's Second Division.

Frias and his teammates are in town for a friendly exhibition game against some of the best players in the Massachusetts State Soccer League, including those from teams such as Hudson Benfica, Lowell Lusitanos, and Lawrence Salazar.

The game will be a celebration for the Portuguese community in the area, says Tony Chaves, the public relations director for the Hudson Portuguese Club.

"There will be all the pomp, with the national anthems and the exchanging of gifts, such as plaques," Chaves said.

Chaves was asked to organize the game with the help of the Frias family, who are also Portuguese.

"The (Frias) family wanted the game to be in Hudson," said Chaves. "The team was asked by the Frias' do to their preseason in the area."

Lusitania did in fact come to New England for its preseason, basing its headquarters at UMass-Dartmouth. The team has recently played preseason games in Ludlow, Lowell, New Bedford, and Taunton before its finale, in Hudson.

Following the game tonight, Frias and his Lusitania teammates will have dinner at the Hudson Portuguese Club, before departing back for the Azores Islands tomorrow.

Not to be lost in the arrival of Lusitania is its opponent.

"They've been here practicing since Tuesday," said Chaves. "They're looking forward to be playing against professionals."

The players on the team are in their 20s, and though they play around Massachusetts, the players are from all over the world.

"There are Portuguese players, but there are also Brazilians and players from the Middle East and Americans as well," Chaves said. "We didn't look at where the players were from, we just took the best players from each area team."

Chaves knows Frias well. His family and the Frias family have a long history, back to the late 1940s and 1950s when both families left Portugal and came to America.

"Tony was a very promising player at Hudson High," recalls Chaves. "Within the Portuguese community, it's always nice to have someone to be playing professionally."

Chaves says he and his family, as well as others in the Portuguese community, keep up with Frias' play in Portugal with help from the World wide web and select television broadcasts.

Coincidentally, Frias suffered an injury against the New Hampshire Phantoms on Monday, but should play tonight, in a limited role.

The game will be at Morgan Bowl tonight at 6 p.m., with tickets costing $5 for adults, and free for children under 12.

Lusitania signed a bunch of players before the deadline

Lusitania finish in 13th place of the II division B and was relegated to the III Azores division, today a Azores parliment all vote against on a protest a vote

    http://www.record.pt/noticia.asp?id=676662&idCanal=61

Wow, I never knew that rule was in place. I was wondering why Lusitania was relegated for finishing 13th.

Even in soccer, they find a way to discriminate against Acores.

I guess it was never really an issue, we've never had this many teams from the Azores perform well enough to reach II B.

Azores dosnt get discrimated only in Soccer.

In Handball "Os Marienses" a team from Santa Maria ,which happens to be my island have been promoted to the Portuguese 1st division, but for some odd reason the Portguese Handball Federation, has told them that they must play a playoff with the winner of the Azores division. Now how the heck does this make sense, Os Marienses win promotion to the 1st fdivision and now they must play against the winner of the Azores (3rd division)to see whter they get promoted or if they will stay in the 2nd division.....If bet if Joao Jardim was the President of the Azorean government this ******** wouldnt be happening....
