Not the first time that ESPN has gotten incorrect info. When Danny Cruz was playing in Norway, his profile would link to some Ecuadoran goalkeeper.

    Snip:

But the Whitecaps appear to not be limiting their search for a central midfielder to overseas.

Another league source tells Metro that former Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Juninho, currently in Mexico with top-side Tijuana, is another potential target of the Canadian side. So too is Luis Gil, a 23-year old American midfielder who transferred to Mexico last year. Gil is a former Real Salt Lake midfielder who has a bevy of experience with the United States at the youth international level as well as two caps with the senior team.

Gil made one appearance in Liga MX in the 2016 Apertura. He also played in two Copa MX games and seven U20 games (scoring one goal).

Yikes. Didn't realize he played primarily with the U20's in the 2016 Apertura. I don't even understand how he was eligible.

Almost every league that doesn't have full reserve teams allows a certain number of overage players to participate with youth teams. They need playing time and it doesn't usually hurt the youth squads that much.

Usually you see it at the U23 level, I can't think of another set up where it applies down to the U20's.

17-19 year old kids don't get as much out of playing with grown men as their developmental peers just a few years older, and vice-versa for the adult.

He played 79 minutes in a 3-0 loss.

By the way, Gil has been making the bench in the league recently (last 3 games). He hasn't played in the Clausura yet, and only 17 minutes in the Apertura.

It's hidden a bit in the upper left hand corner of the graphic, but this is in Copa MX.
