&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Will San Jose commence Operation Cup Freedom with a victory in Smogolia?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Will Los Angeles triumphantly repel the liberators to keep the Cup hostage?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The Earthquakes inching closer toward bringing the Cup back north? The Galaxy clinging to keep the Cup for yet another day?

    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Discuss.

    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp GO EARTHQUAKES!!! :(

I don't see us getting a W down there. I'll settle for a tie, by all means.

I will also be happy with a tie. I think that with all of our starters on the field, we will finally move the ball like we did the last 15 min.of reg. last night. Also, what does everyone think that the starting line-up will be? We need more consistency in front of goal, dwayne is just not doing it. It is just that we have to use our wide mids more in L.A.. In the last game that I went to see there, I never imagined that the field would be so wide, we need to use it to our advantage and spread our game out more Home Depot isn't Spartan.

    ONstad

    Roner Agoos ERob Dunivant

    Mulrooney
    Mullan Corrales
    Ronnie

    Faria Donovan

I may be alone in this but I say bench Faria and start DeRo and Donovan up top. That combination up front was working and scoring goals( Kansas City and Dallas) and last night proved that the DeRo/Faria experiment doesn't work. While we're at it, bench Lagos as well. Faria is good in the air but he's no Ching when it comes to pure physical play. Also, we need to put Mullan back in the midfield where he's the most dangerous. If we have the healthy players I'd start:

    ------Donovan---DeRosario--------
    Corrales--Ekelund--Mulrooney--Mullan
    Roner----Agoos----Dayak-----Dunivant
    -----------Onstad-------------

I'm worried about Onstad also. He seems to let in one soft goal per match lately but that might be due to his missing defense. Screw the tie on the road, play for the three from the first whistle!

I agree with Beerking about starting Donovan and DeRo up top. I didn't like last night's combination of Faria and DeRo because there was no connection. We can sub Faria in for DeRo later in the game.

No. You're not alone in this.
And as far as that lineup goes, it seems very doable. And well have Robinson, too.

    Spot on, Tom.

Play the best eleven available. And play like you're on a mission.

    No excuses.

    And no rules. :D

i think everyone here will agree that we're going to see one hell of an ugly game on saturday with neither team willing to give any.

if more than one goal is scored i will be surprised. the issue at hand is if our defence will be able to hold firm now that we will get our regulars back.

in all liklihood 0-0 is probably a spot on prediction.
san jose can win this thing if donovan and dero click like they were 3 weeks ago.

If either team scores more than once at the HDC-- eg., 2-0 or 3-0-- the series might as well be over, given the defensive prowess of both teams.

Will agree, however, that the ability of Donovan and DeRosario to click like they did just short of a month ago will be the key in Game 1.

Sounds like we're getting a consensus that the people like the Donovan/DeRo tandem up top. Count me in that number. Both have been in the playoffs (and international games with pressure) so they will carry themselves well in this match. While Faria may develop into a prolific player for San Jose, he's not there yet and I don't think he has shown so much "dominance" in the air that I'd choose that over the established connection between Donovan/DeRo.

As for results, we can be happy with a tie if that's the way it plays out but I wholeheartedly agree with Beerking--play all out to win EVERY game now. This is what they've worked for all season and presumably, this is also why they have sleepwalked through the last 3 weeks of the regular season (because they didn't matter.) Now that it does (matter,) show us the team astonished everyone in the league for 6 months!!

    GO QUAKES!!!

11/1 game @ LA on TV?

Do we have a prayer of this happening? I have not yet seen any sign that it will be happening. I have DirecTV and the listings don't show any MLS Playoff games listed except for one on Fox Sports World on 11/1 with TBA for teams. I take it the Shootout has essentially ended for this year?! If so, that bites.

Yep definitely agreed. That Faria/DeRo thing wasn't working and we know that Donovan/DeRo can make it happen.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I'm not yet sure about which games (if any) the Shootout will broadcast (like sj_quakes_fan stated, the Shootout playoff schedule will be announced shortly), but it's been confirmed on the latest MLS Wrap that this game will be televised live on Fox Sports World at 7pm PST.

Quakes need to retake control of the midfield. Hopefully they'll have:

    Corrales-Ronnie-Mullan
    Mulrooney

    starting.

And DeRo either needs to make "positive" plays or get out of the way up top.

Hopefully Agoos is feeling near 100% and even more importantly, hopefully Onstad won't let in any soft goals.

    Prediction: 1-1

    Donovan '32
    Ruiz '72

Donovan does ok on the NATs at O-mid but on the Quakes, he needs to be up top.....no matter who his pairing is.....I'd prefer DeRo. I really doubt that Faria will see any play time in the playoffs......if he does, it will probably be in garbage time. I'm not comfortable with a tie in LA. If the Quakes are smart, they go for the jugular in game #1. If the Galaxy come to San Jose needing only a tie to force a tie-breaker, we are in trouble. If the Galaxy have to come to San Jose and win.....they are in trouble.

    Quakes-3: Mullan 23, Donovan 48(PK) 87
    Galaxy-1: Victorine 33

Definitely agree, ldb. They have to go for the win as big as possible in the first game.
I've been wondering who they will have announcing and for color. Since it's a nationally-televised deal, I would suppose they won't use the homers.
Ruiz will not score, providing Troy is as good as (or better than) he was Saturday.

Quakes at HDC Playoff Game in High Definition

This may be of interest to those who went to Ricky's in San Leandro for the high definition game broadcast early in the season:

HDNet To Provide Exclusive Coverage Of MLS Cup Playoff Games

NEW YORK and DALLAS - October 24, 2003 - Major League Soccer and HDNet have announced exclusive High Definition coverage of the MLS Cup Playoff series beginning with San Jose at Los Angeles on Saturday, November 1st at 10:00 p.m. ET live from The Home Depot Center. MLS Cup Playoff coverage on HDNet will run through the Western Conference Finals on the weekend of November 15th.

This exclusive High Definition coverage will put the finishing touches on the inaugural season of MLS on HDNet, which featured 31 regular season MLS matchups - more national coverage than any other network.

Announcers Glenn Davis and Marcelo Balboa will handle the play-by-play and color commentary for these games, as they have all season for HDNet.

These games will be broadcast exclusively for presentation in the highest quality 1080i High Definition format, giving viewers all the benefits of a 16:9 aspect ratio and high resolution picture.

HDNet will also produce a special MLS on HDNet Season In Review show featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the 2003 campaign, in addition to interviews with both players and coaches.

"Witnessing MLS action in the HD format brings an un-paralleled level of excitement and realism to soccer on television," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "HDNet has been an outstanding partner in bringing this breakthrough format to our fans and we look forward to continue showcasing this technology throughout the MLS Cup Playoffs."

"We're very excited to bring our viewers all the action of the MLS Cup Playoffs in High Definition," said Mark Cuban, co-founder and president of HDNet. "The response from viewers has been amazing. There is no better way to capture the action on the field, and the energy of the fans."

    Yeah, what Beerking said!!

Start DeRo and Donovan up front. And I'll go one better, Jamil for the first sub off the bench (at least for the forwards).

I agree with the lineup too (except that Roner should be on the right and Dunivant on the left).

Dayak and Goose can shut down LA's offense most of the time. Dunivant and Roner will need to have good games. As long as the ref doesn't allow LA to foul our guys with impugnity, we should put them away early. LA just doesn't have it this year.

    GO QUAKES!!

I really think we need to win by at least one goal this weekend. A tie in the 2nd game seems almost inevitable.

    HUH?!?!?

1.The starting line-up will be fine as long as Faria isn't in it.....not because of his skill level but because of cohesiveness. He just hasn't been here long enough. I also agree that Walker would be my sub choice up front before Faria.

    2. Anyone happy with a tie in LA is gonna get a big suprise. If Quakes don't come away from HDC with a victory......cancel Christmas. :(

If the Galaxy begin to "believe".....they will become dangerous. If you knock their collective dicks in the dirt out of the gate, they will give it up like porn stars.
