Galaxy ready to take on Spain's Real Madrid

    AP - Jul 17, 5:08 pm EDT

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Galaxy vs. Galacticos.

Major League Soccer's winningest franchise faces one of Spain's perennial powers when the Los Angeles Galaxy plays Real Madrid on Monday night at the Home Depot Center.

Real Madrid, nicknamed ``Los Galacticos'' because of its roster of international stars, plays the second contest in a six-game tour through North America and Asia.

The Galaxy, which leads MLS with 151 regular-season victories, will not have leading scorer Landon Donovan. The forward will play for the United States in Thursday night's CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.

Three other starters, forward Jovan Kirovski (strained left groin), defender Chris Albright (torn knee ligament) and midfielder Peter Vagenas (strained hip flexor) are coming off injuries.

Leading the Galaxy are midfielder Cobi Jones and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. Jones played in three World Cups and 164 games for the United States. Hartman has 101 career victories, 52 by shutout.

Haha, let them dream... Then again I hope it's another good much. Against Chivas was too good for the eye and I hope Galaxy can play well or play horribly so that we can see many goals.

It seems to me that Owen isn't going to play tomorrow. I think it's going to be the same players that played against Chivas with the exception of Raúl that will come in for Owen.
Luxa seems to like the combination Gravesen-García because it brings balance to the defence. This combination made Pavón play well last time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    -----------------------Casilas-------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------
    Salgado--------Helguera------Pavón------------R.Carlos
    ------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------García--------------------------
    ----------------------------------Gravesen-----------
    ------------------------------------------------------
    Beckham----------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------Zidane--------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------
    -------------Ronaldo----------Raúl--------------------

God, so many good players... Pavón name looks ugly there. And if I may say so, Raúl's name is not looking to good lately. Owen's name looks better.

Ronaldo may not be able to play due to a minor injury (sounds like it will be a last minute decision). Three players missed practice and might see limited or no time tonight: Ronaldo (hamstring), Diogo (foot), and Beckham (back).

It will be interesting to see what these side perform tonight after both played on Saturday.

Honestly, after seeing Ronaldo in the Chivas game, I don't know why Luxemburgo is starting him. He seems like these friendlies are beneath him, and doesn't exert himself. He was anonymous vs. Chivas, whereas Owen worked harder and ran more.

If Ronaldo-Raul start, I hope Ronaldo will be subbed quickly if he keeps on sandbagging it.

Some players have the attitude that if they're sub'ed they've been insulted or something like that. Some coaches take that into account in their decisions for changes in the plantel. Moreover, I fear Ronaldo belongs in that sub-group. (No punt intended) :)

Like I said on the Real Madrid - Chivas thread, I think it is way too early to be analyzing things this much (who will start, who will be subbed, how so-and-so played). I would expect the players that played more minutes in Chicago to get more rest tonight and I don't think that would be a reflection of Luxemburgo's plans. The one player I want to see tonight is Diogo, but he is doubtful.

What an experience for members of the Galaxy to play against the "Galacticos". I know that representing your country is a fantastic honor, but if I was Donovan I'd be hating life right now missing out on such an opportunity.

I think that the people of the USA don´t know yet what team have arrived to LA. I think its like Michael Jordan's Bulls would arrive to Spain and play a match against Real Madrid Basket team. Real Madrid vs L.A. Galaxy = Giant vs Ant

On Ronaldo, this his first game in a long time, so he is obviously below standard... Do you guys know if any channel in North America is broadcasting the game and at what time?

I couldn't agree more. Ronaldo needs to get in better shape. Figo desappointed me as well. Pablo Garcia's performance was fantastic, and he was making his debut. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it tonight but the game is live on Fox Soccer Channel at 10:30 pm.

i think you are under estimating the soccer IQ of american fans. nobody w/ a brain really thinks the Galaxy (particularly this galaxy team...injuries and no Landon Donovan) is anywhere neatr the calibur of Real Madrid. If Madrid win 4-1, it will be a byproduct of that. If its closer, or god forbid the galaxy manage some result, it will be because of the lack of conditioning/effort from the galacticos. As a fan of MLS ill certainly watch this game, but with all of this in mind.

We all know Ronaldo and his constant weight problem, but I wouldn't worry about him... We all know what he can do in the big games

I know that LA are tough for MLS, but this match is gonna be a joke.
I see 3 easy goals in the 1st half by Madrid.

It's foolish for anybody to be worried about comparisons between Real and the Galaxy, or La Liga and MLS, or anything like that. We all know Madrid are a much better team...everybody knows that. Both teams will play to win...LA has nothing to lose, Madrid has nothing to win, save for future financial gains. It should be considered a pre-preseason warmup match...nothing more. Let's just be happy that Madrid is in the states for us to enjoy!

So, 1 hour to gametime. I'm hoping that CCTV5 will show a stream, otherwise I'l be forced to walk a block in the pouring rain to my local bar.

Ronaldo may or may not be playing (I hope he won't), depending if he gets over his hamstring injury. Everyone else is recovered. AS reports that Luxemburgo has been playing a formation with Pablo Garcia as d-mid and Raul as LM. Otherwise the lineup will probably be the same. Unless Ronaldo doesn't play, in which case maybe Soldado will be upfront? We'll see...
