It sure seems like I've seen lots of 3-CB formations this year, both in MLS and in Europe. My general sense is that it's the latest fad. There might be quite a few clubs interested in a player with Cannon's skillset. But I don't have any statistics to back any of this up, just a very general trend I believe I've seen.

Haven't really heard any transfer rumors for Reggie this window, but here's a website claiming that Porto are interested in him: https://bolanarede.pt/especial-bola...to-tem-lateral-da-primeira-liga-referenciado/

Boavista have started off the season with back to back wins. Cannon started again today and went 90 minutes as a RCB in a 2-1 win over Santa Clara.
Yes, he does. He's been pretty solid if unspectacular. The kind of player you can count on for a 6.5 out of 10 minimum--though he's not going to get a 9/10. He has been playing in a 3-man back line, so could also provide tactical flexibility. Glad he's continuing to have locked-down a starting spot on his team, and that they've started the season well.
Cannon starts for Boavista in a visit to Casa Pia. 0-0 at halftime. ⚽ 𝟭𝟭 𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 #CPACBFC#InvictaDeXadrez pic.twitter.com/zRUh12OMmZ— Boavista FC (@boavistaoficial) August 21, 2022

Up 1-0 in injury time. Early days but if they hold on Boavista up to 6th I think. Reggie still on with a yellow it seems.
They won 1-0 today, so up to 5th place in the league it is. The googs says Reggie played the usual RCB in a back 3. I did not watch.
Well, with so many leagues dominated by their Top 2, Big 3, etc. and the rest playing on the counter but minimizing the risk of exposure, that's not a surprise. 3 will stay at the back and the FBs will push on. It's easier conceptually, so slightly easier to coach than a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1, where you've to coordinate 2 wide players and on of the CMs dropping back when attacking.
I would be interested to see a Goals Allowed Comparison between 3CB vs 2CB formations. You would think having 3CBs would help you defensively, but if the outside CBs are not fast, disciplined and great tacklers then they can be exposed easily. They often get baited towards the sideline to stop an opponent only to get beaten by a give-and-go. And since the wingbacks are usually so high up the pitch it often leads directly to quality chances down the sidelines. Also... when the team with a 3CB backline is in possession and turns the ball over anywhere near midfield the lanes to place a thru-ball between the CBs are often pretty large... In the same scenario with 2CBs you often see the thru-ball go outside to the winger and the fullbacks are not as far up the pitch (usually) and are fast enough to get back to help. Obviously, there are ways to attack either defensive formation... but it just seems like that while 3CB system creates better passing lanes forward they also leave more gaps in transition.
Credit. In 21/22 Ligue 1 was the #4 in points, above Serie A and BuLi and barely below La Liga, with Lille surviving the group stage (with PSG of course) and Lyon & Monaco won their Europa groups. However, the Dutch league was the #2, above La Liga and only below the EPL. And the Primeira has been keeping high points all along, quite better than Ligue 1 in 20/21 (and doing better than the Dutch in all seasons before 21/22).
Looking good! It really irks me that Yedlin could keep Reggie or Scally off the USMNT roster. Yedlin is having a much worse season in a worse league than both of them.
