There are several teams across the country and throughout the United Soccer Leagues who are trying to get webcasts on the air, but have a hard time finding people to actually do the play by play for the games. (Many USL teams, especially the lower divisions have very small staffs) I was wondering how many people are out there who either have experience with broadcasting soccer or are looking to get into the business. Previous broadcasting experience would be a plus, but certainly not required. If you have a team near you (check http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/index_E.html for all the USL teams) that doesn't have a radio or internet radio broadcast going on, post in this thread and we'll see if we can help get more USL games on the air.
I think this is a great idea, thus I will sticky this thread for a while to see what type of response we can get. If none, then I will take it down after a while.
I've done some sports broadcasting, but never soccer. I live near two USL teams, in the NC Triangle. Do you know if they are looking to webcast?
Do the NV Royals broadcast their games? I assume not... I'm curious. No broadcast experience but plenty of journalism, not that I expect it transfers.
Well, there's no age pre-req...we just want someone who is going to be able to strive to produce a professional-sounding broadcast. I've seen some pretty young broadcasters who work very hard and when they hit the airwaves, they sound just as good as a veteran. It's all about how seriously you take it and how hard you are willing to work at it. I would actually be very jealous of someone who was fairly young and would be able to take advantage of an opportunity like this...I would have given anything for an opportunity like this at an early age. --------- What I'm doing with this thread is trying to get a list of people who either have experience, or want to get into soccer broadcasting and then when a team contacts me about putting together a webcast, I can say "well, I have Person X who lives near you who would be willing to help." I've had more than a handful of teams so far contact me and say "we'd love to do it but we don't have anyone who can actually broadcast the games." -- so the more people I can get on my list the better. ---------- EMILE: if you have experience broadcasting other sports, and you know the game of soccer...then that's a GREAT start. DAVE: I will be contacting the NV Royals this week to ask if they would like to put their games on the air. For those of you who are interested....send me a PM or an EMAIL me with your name, contact information, what teams you're closest to, what games you could do IF the team needed you, and what experience (if any) you have (and any other tidbits of information that might be helpful). Thanks for your interest, I really hope we can get as many USL teams on the air as possible....and also US Open Cup games (which is one of my primary interests).
Looks like the Royals only have about six home games left this season. I could probably make a few of them with some advance notice.
We're also looking for people who can do road games as well. Some teams will just have the broadcaster travel with the team, and having an extra person on the travel roster isn't usually that big of an extra cost...but if depends on the team. So far we've had a pretty decent response for this...but we could always use more people.
I would also post something in the Business and Media forum. There are lots of people there that might be interested. You might want to post something over at USLDiscussions.com. There are plenty of die hard fans of the USL over there. Not sure about media types. Good luck. I hope you are successful.
I could be interested if VaBeach does move to the DC area, but I can't make it to NoVa, and I can't make it to road games either.
I haven't contacted Virginia Beach yet. I was a little hesitant to do so considering the financial crisis they're apparently in. It's a shame because they play in a nice stadium (so I've heard). I hope they don't fold...hopefully they'll just drop down a division and re-group. Who knows?
Anyone who's interested, send me an email with your name, contact info, location, the closest teams to you, any experience you have and check the schedule of the team that you're interested in and let me know how many games you could attend if they needed you. Teams also might be interested in just people to help out with the broadcast too...if you aren't exactly "broadcast quality" behind a mic, then there are ways to contribute to a broadcast.
I'm a journalism student (trying to become a sportswriter) but I'd really like to try some broadcasting stuff! I could (would love to) do something for the Richmond Kickers, but unfortunately, not until the fall. I'm actually going to try to get a soccer talk show on University of Richmond radio in the fall
potential Seattle Sounders lyricist right here. are you talking about play-by-play or more color oriented broadcasts?
Either...some people are PBP people, some are color people. As far as the Sounders go, I believe the Men's team already has a local radio broadcast (just not online) and they have their games also available on Comcast "on demand" -- I think they are mostly interested in getting the Sounders Women on the air.
The Sounders do have a radio broadcast, but could do with another play by play guy because I think his eyesight is going. He spent the whole game in Virginia Beach on Saturday talking about their astroturf and the way the ball was bouncing on it. Virginia Beach plays on natural grass.
I gotta get my eyes check as well...the New Jersey Wildcats can have as many as 3-4 blond pony tailed players running around at any given time (Lindsay Tarpley, Kelly Hammond, Kate Sands etc.), so that makes it tough to tell right away from a distance, or when they're in a crowd.
Experienced audio engineer and event production guy in Minneapolis. Ready to start announcing MN Thunder games. Let me know!
Anyone know if Atlanta has a webcast? I will be moving there in september and am willing to help out. Augusta would be closer, but their season will almost be over by the time I arrive. I guess if Reading or Ocean City wanted someone until the end of July I could do it also.
Who's making excuses? In reference to this point.. my point was Calloway's team was up 5-0, and things were going really well for his squad.. five shots, five goals.. how often does that happen? As for Pato's' shot, exactly how often does a shot like that go in? I have to admit it has more power on it than I thought from my angle (behind the other goal). For that matter, how often do shots like #2 and #5 go in either? No it wasn't an excuse why we lost. We got outplayed. But everyone loves a night where EVERYTHING goes in, no matter how badly or well hit the shot is, and Rochester got one of those in Portland. Enjoy it. Sit down and enjoy it coach. Don't open your mouth and embarass yourself. I have gone through the 2nd half video 3 times looking for what he is complaining about, and other than the bad offside call that cost the Timbers a goal, I can't see any calls that would get either coach upset.
