  2. Rivaldo went to AC Milan on a free, IIRC.

But prior to that, he had been linked with a move to NUFC, and I beleive that he was rated around £10million (about what we paid for Diouf.) I don't know what the fee would be now that the transfer market has collapsed.

That doesn't surprise me that Houllier doesn't want him. What is surprising is this quote from Rivaldo:

Um, Riv...We played Chelsea back in October and our midfield looked like crap that day.

If we want to challeng Arsenal & Man U, then we need a player with this quality.

This would be a good thing.....

The Frenchman_instead insisted_he is looking at bringing in younger players to the club as he plans for the future.

    ...

"Don't get me wrong, Rivaldo is a fantastic player, but bringing in high-profile players is not the way I work. They cost a lot of money for a limited number of years and I don't like that kind of risk.

"The key is to bring in young, talented players and to get them to understand the culture and philosophy of Liverpool. That's why I want to keep the heart of this club British, with players like Michael Owen, Danny Murphy, Stevie Gerrard, Emile Heskey and Jamie Carragher."

    Hmmmmmmm.

    Also,
"Players like Diouf, Cheyrou and Diao have taken time to settle, but that is normal with foreign players," he added.

"Look at Veron at Manchester United, look at some of Arsenal's best players - they also needed time to adjust to life in England"

I hope he's right about Diouf, Cheyrou and Diao, but he seems to be forgetting that players like Veron, RVN and Henry (albeit to a lesser extent) were proven commodities before arriving in England.

Anyway, I'm not holding my breath to see Rivaldo end up at Anfield.

Signing a player like Rivaldo, a proven midfield general who is NOT in a end of career slump, and keeping him around for a couple of seasons can only be a good thing. He could teach Diouf, Cheyrou and Diao a thing or two. His influence over the younger players GH protects and coddles so much could be very profound.

Rivaldo's not having that great a year with Milan (5 goals in only 16 of 26 games). I think the physicality of Serie A is affecting him, and the EPL is more physical than Serie A. Or maybe he hasn't been the same since he got in the face with the ball during the EC.

I still have this picture of him getting hit (lightly) on the knee with the ball and seeing him drop to the ground like he’d been shot, holding his face.
You guys might want that playing for Liverpool, sorry I don’t.

GH has done a lot to make sure that our players aren't divers. Remember when Smicer was accused of it in that game he "earned" us a game-winning PK? Vlad hasn't done too much of that lately. And Diouf also seems to have taken it out of his game, too.

Emile Heskey used to go down far too easily when he first got to Liverpool. Then GH went on TV and defended him.Emile stays up a bit better now.

It would be nice if he would come for about £40,000 a week tops. But that's not how Rivaldo operates. Besides, assuming these comments have been faithfully reported, what of his current position with AC Milan? If I were a Milanese, I would be right pissed off with him.

It's all bollocks in any case, of course.

Well, one incident in the World Cup does not a cheater make, and if that were true, than Diouf and Emile Heskey should be shipped out Liverpool immediately. I remember being somewhat surprised when that happened, because I never viewed Rivaldo as that sort of player. He's a hard worker and can take control of matches. This is a team that even a proven international like Didi Hamann and "best hope" Steven Gerrard can't get to calm down and have an effective midfield. Even if he rarely played, his presence and advice would be priceless.

Of course, it's never gonna happen.

    'Priceless'?

Listen, no offence, but how many people on this board have had to stick 300% increases in ticket prices in recent years?

    ;)

Well, "priceless" may be a bit overboard. Besides, Ananova is now reporting that Rivaldo claims he never said any of this.

I love the idea of a French coach trying to keep the "English" flavor of his team.
