Listened to Extratime. Each team could designate 1 Olympic replacement ahead of the Olympic window for unlimited callups during that period. Crew didn't designate anyone while Doop and NYRB did. So Lapkes callup counted. We didn't need to take 3 keepers to CCC. Wiebe said they did so for development. We will see what happens in October
Yep. Far as I’m concerned, this is done now. Nancy, Bez, Tall, and Romero all had a part to play. I’ll give them all 25% of the blame and call it a day.
I actually give Romero a higher percentage. After all, he is the one who got sent off. Everyone is just kind of overlooking the fact that even if we DID have a backup goalie on the roster, we were still going to play 45+ minutes with ten men.
Yah. Ten Men was the bigger deal. Maybe an actual Keeper would have kept the game closer, but Playing against a team decent team with 7 backups and down a man is a tall order for any club except Miami.
Also i heard NYRB got that exception because their roster was full and we didn’t because we had open roster spots so therefore it is not an emergency. That was on Massive Report On the other hand they said it wasn’t a red card (smh) They sounded serious but perhaps they were joking.
Does anyone know if the four call-up rules apply to pre-season friendlies? Or was it just an in-season friendly (Aston Villa)? If we had called up a crew 2 guy to play in our preseason game vs Toronto, does that count as one of the call-ups? And if not, why does it for Villa? Just curious.
On massive report idk if they were joking or not but they said the MLS set that gm up and therefore it counted seems like they jokingly called it a leagues cup showcase game The entire ordeal is ridiculous, MLS rules have always been absurd
Yes, I was quite impressed with AZ in the first half (much, MUCH, better than Chambost) AZ seemed like a guy that would be helpful just with his energy level, even if his skill wasn't there, but the skill wasn't bad either. I wasn't too excited about bringing him in when he was signed, but he may have a high ceiling.
Nobody has said much about Herrera either. I thought he showed some very good skills but was having some problems integrating with the system At first I thought he was either slow or lazy but after awhile it really seemed more like he was confused about what he was supposed to be doing.
I'll fault MLS for not granting the hardship exception. If they move a match into an international window and a team has their top 2 GKs called up, they should have approved having Johnson or Lapkes on the bench without even blinking. Don't MLSNP guys get paid at the MLS minimum rate for games they're called up? Sort of like practice squad guys in the NFL?
They’re signed to four day MLS contracts. I assume they’re for league minimum. Of course, they’d also get paid a bonus for dressing, playing in a game, and even more if we win.
So presumably they get some tiny amount of union dues deducted for the brief time they are coved by the CBA. It's hard to see the union's objection as they aren't taking anyone's job. Even if there were unlimited callups, if the players are covered by the CBA working conditions while on the senior team bench, why would the union care?
Well, apparently MLSHQ had discretion to grant or not the extra callup. NYRB got 3 extra appearances for one of their MLSNP guys who covered for a guy at the Olympics. If only we'd had a guy at the Olympics...
I think the easy one is the AV friendly. All other issues aside - taking 3 keepers to CCC matches when they didn't have to, playing more games than anyone else, etc., a lot of which does indeed come down to poor management decisions, that one exposes MLS HQ for their real malice. It was, in a very real sense, a scrimmage. They might as well have brought in the Birmingham Klansmen or East Texas Baptist Teachers College or the Little Sisters of the Poor; same difference to anyone, anywhere. To even call it an exhibition is to give it more dignity than it deserves. MLS could have easily sold it. They didn't want to. And that's my problem with all.of this. Screw the Shield, the Crew isn't going to.win it anyway. Miami is a lock, pending the mountains crumbling and the oceans going dry. This was something more; this was MLS thumbing their noses at Columbus, a big fat screw you. And since the ownership is committed to.playing nicey-nice with the bastards in New York, they don't seem to have the balls to stand up and cry foul. If they did, maybe Garber and his minions would think twice before screwing the Crew over.
Is that the Birmingham (England) Klansman? Just checking… I do remember the scoreboard for that game saying “leagues cup showcase” as if it wasn’t a friendly and more of some sort of serious thing. The CCC situation irks me. No reason to have 2 keepers on the bench. It’s almost unheard of to need 2 GK subs. If that was not required than this whole thing is on Nancy for wasting those call ups. I’m not too mad at him. He’s been so good that a little mistake now and then isn’t the end of the world. This is the price of success. Every other team in this league is jealous. They’d all love to be in our situation.
Aston Villa played the Crew and Club America as part of the Leagues Cup showcase for the teams with a bye. It was set up. Brianna said on the soccer speakeasy podcast that she point blank asked Nancy today why we didn't name Lapkes as the Olympic call up, and he said we did all we could. Part of me wonders if the league emailed the Olympic call up rule change to Bez and not Issa. Stuff like that happens. Why we brought two GKs and not just signing Cole for the rest of the season sort of annoys me still. They hope Bush is back by October fyi.
