I know how far-off the British media can be, but being an Arsenal fan, I was intrigued that more than one paper picked up a lead that Wenger was looking at picking up Beckham in the summer window. The articles had numerous quotes about Beckham wanting go back to London, and play for a champion. Anyone in the UK have any thoughts on this?

I think it's just a rumor. I don't think Arsenal has that much money to spend on a player, even someone like Becks. I'm not saying that they're poor; that's just a heck of a lot of money especially in the current climate. I think the rumor getting repeated is a bit because it's David, a bit because it involves ManU-Arse rivalry, and a bit because the transfer window is closed so they don't have the usual current season juicy transfer rumors to report.

very good points, but what if Viera walks after this year? that opens a midfield spot and some money

This is over already. Beckham is staying at Old Trafford...

Anybody who knows anything about David Beckham knows that he's a Red and that's that.

    1) Threads merged

    2) This isn't going to happen for a number of reasons. (United won't let him go, too high a price for Arsenal, where would he play in a midfield that already has Vieira, Silva, Edu, Freddie, and Pires).

Beckham would never go and play for Arsenal, if it got to the stage where he couldn't work with Fergie he would go to a top european side, such as Real Madrid, where posh spice could also live the high life as she would certainly have a say where he went.

I think the inaccuracy of this story begins at a point some way prior to "Beckham might go to Arsenal". It actually begins with "Wenger wants him to".

    First, Beckham is overrated.
Second, I don't see how he'd improve the current Arsenal team and their chemistry.

All good points. I suppose it's just the British press being the British press; although I do disagree with the comment about Beckham being overrated. I can't stand ManUtd, but Beckham is one of the best English players in history.

He's overrated by the English. He was worthless in the Worldcup. I would not take Beckham over any over Pires, Viera, Gilberto, or a healthy Ljunberg.

    Why would they want Beckham?

Do you still feel that your perspective carries any value on any issue such as this? Seriously, now.

Ok Matt. You are building a team. Your first pick needs to be Beckham or Pires, who would you pick? Pretend Pires is English and I'll pretend Beckham is French. I pick Pires.

I would pick the best player, regardless of nationality. You?

My good Doctor, I pressume since you did not weigh in with a comment, that your pick would also be Pires, but you did want to admit it. lol.

I agree, Beckham wouldn't get in the Arsenal team if I was picking it ahead of Pires or Ljungberg, who always gets goals when they matter. Good player, hopelessly over hyped by a celebrity obsessed and already bias media. Best player in the world? He's not even close to being the best mid fielder at his club.

Slash.....FINALLY. Finally there is a poster on this thread that offers an unbiased opinion. I'd pick Scholes, and Keane ahead of Beckham. If Giggs was still a mid, I'd probably pick him too.

Yes, Beckham has scored many free kicks. I got news for you...since he takes 90% of the kicks, he is likely to get more goals than the other players from free kicks.

I no way mean to diminish his skill as a free kick specialist, Beckham is very good in this area, and he is an excellent crosser of the ball. But, I still think he's overated and I would not pick him for a midfielder to represent the Premiership.

Take away his good looks, hair and his singer wife, and we probably would not be having this conversation.

Agreed he is an excellent crosser of the ball. But what the hell do we want a good crosser of the ball at Highbury for? Our strikers have an aversion to getting into the penalty area when the ball is out wide and Silva and Vieira don't break into the box like Scholes and Keane. He'd be a complete waste.

Now here's a few knowledgeble fellas in Italy weighing in with an opinion on Beckham.

Soccer-Beckham one for the ladies not Serie A, says Juve chief

MILAN, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi, the man responsible for the Italian club's dealings in the transfer market, has laughed off suggestions that his club could make a move for Manchester United's David Beckham.

"He is liked more by women than by me," said Moggi ahead of Juve's Champions League match against United in Turin on Tuesday.

"I don't think that he is a phenomenal player and I don't believe he will come to Italy. I don't think he is someone who will change your team," added Moggi in an interview with the weekly Contro Campo.

Beckham's recent clash with United manager Alex Ferguson has renewed speculation that the England international could make a move to Serie A.

But that suggestion has led to two of the biggest clubs in Italy quickly ruling themselves out of any possible bidding.

On Saturday, AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he was not keen on seeing Beckham at the San Siro.

Asked whether he thought an approach was on the cards, Ancelotti said: "I really don't think so. He is not my ideal player, if that is what you want to know.

"With Beckham we would have to modify our system of play and that is not part of our plans."

Milan had an approach for Beckham rejected by United in July 2000 but have been linked with the midfielder every time his future at Old Trafford has been brought into question.

Moggi said if Juventus did make a major signing in the close season it would likely be a defender.
