Here is a number that may last for a long long long long long long time as a local tv ratings record for a Revolution game. http://boston.com/dailyglobe2/295/sports/Good_memories_come_to_mind+.shtml "Sunday's MLS Cup at Foxborough was another watershed moment for professional soccer in this country. The game did a respectable 3.9 rating (10 share) here, and the TV picture screamed: ''Big Time Event.''
Boy oh boy that is a very good number,I wish we had half that ratings with ABC. The link is not working
Hats off to the NE fans who have supported their team admirably, by putting fannies in seats, through some dismal times. I wish you continued success on the field, except at the expense of DC United.
That number is terrific. I think it was all the result of a week of solid hype on the part of local media and maybe it reflects the true market potential of this team (i.e. there are lots of soccer fans around here). It'll be interesting to see if any of this interest carries over to next season in terms of higher attendance and higher ratings for regular season broadcasts. And if nothing else, those numbers from Sunday ought to get the attention of potential Revs sponsors.
Yes I agree the few times we have seen these, they have been very interesting. If memory serves Houston has had a pretty nice number a couple of times. Andy
And that is really what it's all about. A good local rating is the advertising foot-in-the-door MLS needs. Local advertisers get interested, pays MLS based on ratings, money gets put back in the league, more promotion, better crowds, better salaries, better ratings, etc. This is where the NHL was 25 years ago, solid local coverage, ad revenue and fanbases (box of Tasty Cakes, anyone?). And when Gretzky and to some exent, Lemieux come along, the national scene breaks. It could happen with MLS, too.
Except where else was Gretzky going to pay besides the NHL? The coming "soccer Gretzky" is not likey to play in MLS at all. No Gretzky type of player is going to been seen in MLS until the league gets at least an NHL sized TV deal. Not that we could never see that day, mind you...
ratings in San Diego: 0.3 with a 1 share. disappointing. i think in the past we've had anywhere from .7 to a 1.1 for the Cup final.
