UGH (United German Hungarians) advanced on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw to make it through the first round of the Region 1 qualifying tournament for the US Open Cup.

Their quarterfinal game will be at home (up near Neshaminy Mall) on May 2nd against Charm City FC from just south of Glen Burnie MD. Charm City advanced through the first round by virtue of a forfeit after their opponent lost their sponsorship and was unable to continue in the tournament.

Wishing UGH the best of luck and hoping this is the start of a long run.

Other clubs of local interest are Phoenix FC, from Feasterville (lost in first round), and Go-Soccer FC who won... but are more a North Jersey club in my book so I lump them together with the NY vibe.

Ok, bit of an update now after the quarterfinal round.

UGH Advances to semi-finals, beating Charm City FC (MD) 3:1.

Fenerbahce USA (E NY) def Fenerbahce USA (E NY) on PK's.
In the semi's they will face Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) who won 1-0 over Go-Soccer FC (NJ).
You'll notice from the first post that Brooklyn was previously eliminated, but they were allowed back in after Emigrantes das Ilhas (MA) were disqualified. Read more about that little bit of drama here. Sounds a little fishy.

On the other half of the bracket NY Pancyprian Freedoms (E NY) beat DS Aegean Hawks (DC/VA) (2:1) to advance to the semifinal game against our United German Hungarian's.

UGH Eliminated in what sounds like a real heart-breaker of a game.

They gained a man advantage late in the 1st half after a 2nd yellow to their opponent, but failed to capitalize. Then up against 10 men, UGH conceded a penalty kick opportunity in the 89th minute. You can just imagine the lump in their throats... and their joy when their keeper saved the shot.
Still at 0-0 after overtime, the match went to PK's and UGH lost 0-0 (3-0 PKs).
