...against Arsenal? http://www.cafc.co.uk/news/latest_news.jsp?fileRef=news.featured.featured2 http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=134791&Title=Addicks+duo+up+for+Gunners+test
I'm not familar with this player. Is he American? PlanetFootball lists his birthplace as Leeds. edit: I see that Dave Marino-Nachison has him listed as a YA in his big mother list on the Son Of All Yanks Abroad thread. So I assume he has dual citizenship. Anyone have any info on where his loyalties lie?
There's no mention of the word "American" in either article. His brother Andrew has an updated bio that points out he was born in England. Presumably, the same goes for Lloyd. Consider also that we've heard nothing about Lloyd getting a call-up for the US U-20's. http://www.titansports.org/msoccer/2002/players/sam.html Lloyd attended American International schools, but do we even know whether he is eligible for US citizenship? This whole connection is starting to sound a little rickety.
From the brother's bio... PERSONAL: Born on Nov. 1, 1982, in Leeds, England... Parents are Andrew Sam of Pasadena and Adelaide Sam of London... It's a bit of an assumption, but if his dad is actually "from" Pasadena, meaning born there or lived there long enough to get US citizenship before last year (when Lloyd would have turned 18) then it would appear the kid is eligible for US citizenship through his papa. Factor in that he went to American school in a country where there isn't an English barrier and it points to being a US citizen. That said, I just can't believe Rongen hasn't taken a look at this kid. From the Charlton release - "Lloyd has been our most creative and exciting player throughout the season. He has a natural ability to go past players and he has made great strides with his understanding of the game this season. Earlier reports said he was playing on the right flank. That just happens to be one of the U20 teams weaker positions (converted forward Devin Barclay has been manning it). Even if he is a central player, I can't believe the US couldn't use a player of this quality at the U20 level. I mean, recent results against Canada (loss), Mexico (loss), and Colombia (loss, tie) would seem to suggest they do. Regardless, congrats to the kid for the promotion.
i think i might have mentioned this before but one of my friends roomed with him for soccer camp at indiana over the summer and llyod told him a little story about how he quit school: llyod thought his math teacher didn't like him and was grading his tests like that so he did something about it. After getting back a test he got a low grade on, he crumpled up the test, went up to the teacher, threw it at his face and say i don't need school, i will make millions playing soccer, and walked out. the ultimate thug.
I contacted him to find out his status for the U-20 team. I'm still not sure if he's actually eligible to play for the USA, but he made it crystal clear that he had no interest in playing for the USA.
I wasn't implying that he was anti-American, just that the incident with the math teacher was over the top.
