Merseyside derby this Saturday! In the U.S., it will be shown in HD on ESPN2 at 7:45 am ET. Everton has played decently (relatively speaking) in recent years at Anfield, with quite a few draws. But the last time the Toffees beat the Red Shit at Anfield was way back in 1999. http://www.soccerbase.com/head2.sd?team2id=1563&team1id=942 That's just about when I started to follow Everton closely, but for the life of me, I can't remember that game. Unlike most recent seasons, I actually think we have a pretty good chance at Anfield this time. I don't want to jinx the team, but I'm predicting a 1-0 win for the Toffees. COYB!
They've picked up their form but so have we. We've got to go for it. In recent years we've set up defensively in fear of an embarrassment but if we go for it, me might actually win there. It's been far too long.
In honor of our last victory at Anfield back in September, 1999, here are the Everton heroes of that day: G: Paul Gerrard (no relation to Steven, thank goodness) D: Michael Ball D: Richard Gough D: Richard Dunne (wish you were still a Blue) D: David Weir M: Abel Xavier M: Nick Barmby M: John Collins M: Don Hutchison F: Kevin Campbell F: Francis Jeffers Everton won 1-0 that day, on a goal by Super Kev in the 4th minute. Not surprisingly, 3 players were sent off that day. Francis Jeffers and Liverpool's Sander Westerveld in the 76th minute, and Stevie G in the 90th minute. It is a bit surprising, though, that we won considering the referee was a Mr. Mike Riley http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=267580
I remember that game but can't remember the goal. I think we stand a good chance in this game. Then again I thought we did in the last, but a deflected goal soon f'ed that up. It's KEY that Fellaini doesn't get himself booked early. We need him being physical all through the game, to neutralise Mascherano.
Just to get off the game for a bit, wanted to post out there that I know there'll be a viewing in Boston on Saturday. There will also be one in Nashua, NH for those in the area. PM me if interested in either.
I do think we can beat them in their own graveyard. We played really well away at Chelsea and at arsenal and only ended up with a point in each game. If we go there with the same attitude and want to win we will get 3 points. Fellaini has been playing great. The game against City he was magic. Cahill to score and hopefully Landon. COYB
I knew Abel Xavier was well travelled, but until you brought it up, I hadn't realized he went directly from Everton to Liverpool on a transfer. I doubt that has happened very often -- anyone have an idea on how many players have transferred directly from Everton to Liverpool, or from Liverpool to Everton? BTW, one thing interesting about Xavier that I noticed back when he played for the Los Angeles Galaxy is that he played in practically all the major football leagues in Europe: EPL: Everton, Liverpool, Middlesbrough La Liga: Real Oviedo Serie A: Bari, Roma Bundesliga: Hannover 96 Eredivisie: PSV Eindhoven Portuguese Liga: Benfica Turkey: Galatassaray (loan) All that's missing is a stint in France. He should have tried to get loaned to Monaco or PSG to fill out his resume.
Decent article on the match(albeit Donovan centric) at ESPN http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/story?id=4883628&ex_cid=2010_EPL_0105_everton_hdr_xx1
Nicky Barmby did it. Gary Ablett did it one way or the other as well. Xavier was shit, most people were shocked Liverpool actually wanted him.

What's up with this ref? Carragher runs through Pienaar and no foul is called., Then Reina is supposedly fouled though he's hardly touched.
stupid peanut. that isn't necessary. sure i know you wanna get back at gerrard for his bs but that isn't how you do it. wtf happened to bily? donovan had one good run the second half and that was it. pretty much none of the subs did anything to influence the game other than the yak. fml
Other than Osman, our midfield pretty much sucked today. Once Liverpool went a man down, I would have liked to see Donovan and Pienaar exploit the wings and take advantage of the extra space. For some reason, though, Donovan was all over the pitch, and for the most part, it didn't work out well for the team. Arteta looked rusty, and definitely did not come close to filling Fellaini's shoes. I thought the defense as a whole played pretty well. Though Tim Howard never looked too confident, and he and Neville certainly messed up on the Kuyt goal.
I didn't see anything wrong with the way Howard handled the previous corners but I saw it when Kuyt scored.
