Salif Diao made his first appearance in a red shirt as a makeshift Liverpool side completed their pre-season preparations with a shock 1-0 defeat against non-league Chester City.

With the new season just five days away the Reds team was a blend of experience and youth, containing players who did not start against Arsenal in the Community Shield and young reserves.

As well as Diao, who lasted 60 minutes, fellow new recruit Bruno Cheyrou also started, while ex-Red Steve Harkness lined up for a Chester side celebrating ten years at the Deva Stadium and managed by Liverpool's 1992 FA Cup winning captain Mark Wright.

In what was an uneventful match Liverpool failed to make their Premiership superiority show and the Nationwide Conference club took full advantage by snatching a winner through Chris Blackburn eight minutes from time.

    Highlights

4 mins: Bruno Cheyrou, sporting a dazzling pair of white boots, goes down clutching his ankle following a late challenge from Chester defender Jimmy Kelly but is quickly back on his feet following treatment.

7 mins: Cheyrou sends a free-kick into the Chester danger zone from the left but keeper Brown collects with ease.

13 mins: Carragher tracks back well and puts in a timely tackle on Beesley as he lines up a shot at goal.

15 mins: Good defensive work by Warnock thwarts another Chester attack.

19 mins: Liverpool's best move of the match so far sees Biscan and Berger combine well but the final ball through to Smicer is over hit and it runs through to the Chester keeper.

22 mins: Kirkland is called into action for the first time, cutting out a cross from the left by Beesley.

23 mins: Diao catches Chester full back Hatswell with a late challenge near the halfway line.

26 mins: The Czech trio of Berger, Baros and Smicer link up to launch a swift counter attack that forces a corner but the resultant set-piece comes to nothing.

29 mins: McIntyre blasts a 25-yard free-kick wide of Kirkland's goal after Warnock committed a foul.

30 mins: Biscan blazes over after showing some neat skill on the edge of the Chester box.

37 mins: Carl Ruffer shoots high over the stand with a speculative effort from distance.

38 mins: Twiss fires narrowly wide with a fierce drive that stretches Kirkland.

39 mins: Babbel heads over from close range following a Berger corner.

45 mins: Baros makes a determined inward run from the right but shoots low and wide of the goal.

    Half-time: Chester City 0 v 0 Liverpool

52 mins: Chester keeper Brown has to be alert when a defensive clearance rebounds off Berger and threatens to loop into the net

55 mins: Chester make four substitutions - Carey, Blackburn, Carden and Brady replacing Woodyatt, Kelly, McIntyre and Davies.

56 mins: Smicer plays a ball across the face of goal but Cheyrou is unable to get a touch to direct it goalwards.

58 mins: Kirkland comes confidently off his line to collect a corner floated in from his right.

60 mins: Liverpool make a triple substitution - Diomede, Welsh and Partridge replacing Smicer, Cheyrou and Diao.

61 mins: Chester make a further two changes - Cameron and Grant replacing Beesley and Twiss.

69 mins: Berger shoots into the side-netting after latching onto an intelligent flick forward by Diomede.

71 mins: Liverpool make another double substitution - Ostemobor and Mellor replacing Babbel and Baros.

73 mins: Chester change their goalkeeper, sending Worsnop on for Brown.

77 mins: Liverpool make their final two changes - Sjolund and Arphexad replacing Biscan and Kirkland.

78 mins: Cameron heads wide for Chester with what is a rare goalscoring opportunity.

80 mins: Partridge sends Mellor racing through on goal but the Chester defence gets back in numbers and the youngster unluckily loses possession.

82 mins: Ostemobor leaps highest in a crowded penalty area and heads Berger's cross from the right narrowly wide.

84 mins: GOA L! Chester City 1 v 0 Liverpool Chris Blackburn breaks the deadlock for the hosts. Racing clear of the Liverpool defence and rounding Arphexad before slotting the ball into an empty net.

87 mins: Ostemobor gets on the end of a dangerous looking centre from Diomede but fails to direct his header goalwards.

    Full-time: Chester City 1 v 0 Liverpool

Well, look at this way - Houllier said before the game that he had his starting line up for the Villa game "85% done".

After that sorry showing by Liverpool Reserves, at least he can enjoy the rest of the week with his line up already 100% done. :p
