"Live Draft" Using CYKI Anyone?

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in forming a special 10-manager division of CYKI in which each player would only be allowed to be owned by one team at a time.

Basically, I get tired of the standard "stock market" style of most fantasy soccer games. I mean, where's the fantasy when every manager in your league gets to own Van Nistleroy? Or when every manager totally switches his entire lineup week to week according to matchups? I was initially excited by deadlystrike, but with only 8 man squads and no position requirements, it now seems like more of the same.

    So my proposal is:
    1) 10 managers in a private CYKI group
    2) We hold a live draft, either on one night in the BS Chatroom, or what is called a "semi-live draft" using email.
    3) Once a player is taken, he would be "off limits" for everyone else.
    4) For free agent signings during the season, a manager would have to post his move on the league message board.
    5) Before making a free agent signing, every manager would have to check the board to make sure the player has not already been added.
    6) Trades would be easy, as the two managers could each just make the move themselves.
    7) This system would have the added benefit of CYKI's financial system, which would add a nice twist to our moves. Team stability and long range planning would be key.

With 10 squads, I think we could each fill our teams mostly with consistent starters. That would be 150 slots, while there are 220 starting positions available on Premiership teams.

Post here if interested, or if you have any questions or suggestions.

Also note, CYKI is still in "preseason mode," so it's not like we are starting behind the 8 ball.

    Ingromius (probable)

    So four spots open.
Also, Ingromius is on Euro time now too, so I'm thinking the "semi-live email draft" will be best. We have the time anyway, even if the draft takes a few days, as CYKI's season doesn't start for a little while yet.

I'll set up a Private League and PM you guys the password.

Well if the Deadlystrike tourney is in doubt, let me be in on this one as well.
Regarding your seventh point, how would you utilize the financial side of CYKI? would you still have a salary cap? A cap would seem hard to manage in such a loose league structure.

I wasn't saying the Deadlystrike division was in doubt...I just don't think it's going to be very engaging, seeing as positions are meaningless.

As for the finances with CYKI, I don't think there's any way to disenable them, so we will have to deal with the cap. However, since we'll each have at most 2-3 "stars" with their high costs, we should be able to field our teams and stay under. And if is tight for some, then I think that adds a cool twist to the game...perhaps trades becoming necessitated due to fnances a la MLS?

In any case, we'll definitely want to get the draft complete before the first deadline when salaries will begin to rise.

Well, Dr Jones knows me well -- and while I'm hard to motivate in terms of practical things like thesis writing, I can surely find the time to take part in a live draft. The Euro time thing might be a hitch, as might the demanding work schedule, but if we can find a common time -- maybe a Friday or Saturday afternoon (US time) -- I'd be all for such a draft. In fact I think it would make for a far, far superior game.

I've never been in more than one CYKI league at a time; would we simply create new teams for this league?

With Ingromius confirmed and Plundun, that gives us 7 managers. Three more and we can get underway with the draft. If everyone could PM me with your emails, I'll send out a group one to describe the draft and give the league password.

Also, I do believe you'll have to set up a new identity with premierleague.com in order to create a second team.

    Maverick gets us to 8.
That would be enough for a decent league, but 10 would be better, I think.

Anyone know of two more potentials?

    Alternate Draft Proposals

    Jay,

Did you get my email suggesting two independent, alternate draft proposals?

    1. Establish a certain sequence, as to which positions would be drafted by which round. I proposed one that would get 10-12 players without worrying about the salary cap.

    2. My preferred alternative: Let each manager, along with their wish lists by position, provide a sequence of which positions they want drafted in each round. Thus, one manager might opt to draft a midfielder with round 1 pick or a goalkeeper to get his first choice. Each manager would submit a sequence to pick 2 GK, 5 D, 5 M, 3 S in the sequence they wanted. The draft would then go 1-10 in round 1 and reversed each round thereafter.

If I knew my draft position in advance, I would devise a sequence to optimize my chances to get certain key players I want.

    If I had 1,20,21,40,41,60, I would probably go 1 - F (Henry), 20 - G (best still available) 21 - F/M

I also do not like not being able to adjust my sequence or selection based on the knowledge of whom I've already drafted and who is still available. In the example above, if I knew which F were left, I expect I would rather have my highest M available on my list as opposed to a 2nd rate F pick.

Without it being a live draft, I don't know how to solve that. Post on the PremierSoccer message board for our division the results after each round's picks and wait 1 hour before starting the next round so managers can send in a revised sequence and priority list by position. If a manager doesn't update his sequence or position priority lists, then you used the last submitted for the next round. Complete that round, post results, wait an hour, and so on.

I'm with Hal in that we need to know what's happening to the picks as we go -- who's still available and what buying power we have to pick them up with, or our budget may not even meet the requirements.

This really does need to be done live when everyone is logged into (CYKI) and Big Soccer so that they can keep an eye on players available vs budget left.....

Hal and Michel, I agree that a live draft would be much better, and I had originally planned on one. But I'm gone on a boat from Thursday afternoon to Monday, and another guy is travelling for a wedding. We also have people on different continents. Add this to the fact that I've never participated in an online draft in which all managers showed up, and it just seemed like there was no way it would work.

So this was the backup plan, trying to salvage the idea of a "true" fantasy universe for CYKI.

However, I think you both correctly point out that this will require some modifications to take into account the financial contraints. I'm going to brainstorm tonight for some creative ways to account for that issue (have already spoken to Hal about it), and I"ll let you all know ASAP.
