After what the "paneleiros" greeks just went thru i have a hard time grasping the fact that anybody would ever want to host the olympics again! With the new security measures that have to be in place it's kind hard to make any profit!
If New York gets 2012 olympics then maybe Portugal has a chance. But if London. Paris or Madrid get it. Then Portugal will be finshed even before they start.
it looks like the best candidate will be Paris, they have the best planned and they are doing everthing to beat New York. New york is having a problem building a stadium, at it is
I guarentee Portugal would do a way better job hosting the olympics than Greece. The way they ran the euro was superb planning, granted the Olympics are way bigger Greece didn't start to push until the end while Portugal was ready months in advance. Come on New York!
The Olympics are a huge waste of money and I could never understand why nations were willing to blow their reserves to hold them. An example is Montreal, before the summer games were held in Montreal, it was the top city in Canada...not anymore. The debt they accumulated was enormous and the investments from then on went to Toronto instead (which overtook them as the largest city in Canada). Greece blew something like 11 billion for a 3 week sporting event. You can run a space program for that kind of money . The Aussies ran a very good Olympics, as did the Spanish in Barcelona but security concerns have brought the price of holding the games to unsustainable levels. Greece blew all of the great economic progress it made over the last 10 years in 3 weeks and their taxpayers will be carrying the burden for many years to come. Yes Portugal built 10 stadiums for 550 million euros, but only a quarter of that was paid for by the government. The Olympics would be almost entirely funded by the government. The IOC should select 1-3 locations to hold the games every 4 years. No need to continue this massive waste if there are already fine facilities in these countries that recently held the games. Olympics...no thanks.
