I’m reminded of early 90s Gretzky as an LA King. Still set the standard but a shadow of his Edmonton days and didn’t win any more cups.
Well Messi couldn’t win any World Cups until he was 35, which to me is mostly a validation of the fallacy of Great Man theory.
This is just using their standard metrics. Zidane averaged 8.36 in 1998. Pele got 8.43 in 1970, Rivelino 8.58 and Jairzinho 8.35. Müller was the top German in 2014 with 7.74. Pele probably would have got a 10 in 1958 but they didn't go back that far.
When he's been that much better than everyone else, even playing sub par to his best, he's still among the elite.
I watched the KOR game yesterday, and I thought Son was playing as if he were ill or hurt, i.e. barely moving. So sad.
