If they do end up cancelling the season that would provide the perfect opportunity to correct the CCL entrants. Send América and Monterrey, plus the 2020 apertura finalists. From there on out you can use the two prior tournament's finalists.
Screw it, just give Cruz Azul the championship They gave Wilas a star for winning that bullshit PRODE 1985 tourney Seems fair
But do you want to do that, though? Because if and when Mexico finally returns to the Libertadores, the current set up allows Liga MX to send the best (non-CCL-bound) teams from the Apertura. I mean, yeah, this year's bunch wouldn't have been that sexy (Santos Laguna, Querétaro, Necaxa - assuming no extra berth for Mexico)...but last year would've seen América, Cruz Azul and Pumas playing the Libertadores, which would've been spectacular.
😂 https://t.co/M56hgmNZE4— Luis Herrera 🍕 (@luisrha) March 16, 2020
They can't give em the title, that'd be way unfair. Teams play to make the playoffs, not to be Superleader. Since being Superleader means fck all, and is usually cursed, teams treat the season differently. If they'd known that being #1 gives you the trophy, many would have changed their approach, and many results would have been different. Finish it in the summer like other leagues. Truncate the Fall tourney, maybe have a 16 team playoff for it.
Well, damn... If Mexico is now going full closed-pyramid, is there at least talk of giving Concacaf berths to the Copa MX winners? b/c otherwise, this move will go even further than the US's pyramid, completely locking everyone below Liga MX out of international football.
If this move ever becomes official and Liga MX is in fact a step closer to merging with the MMLS, I really truly hope that fans stop going to the games all together. The league, clubs, and in turn the NT will suffer tremendously. But hey, more money trying to pimp out the league in the USA right?
