I like black licorice better, but that's not to say I wouldn't eat the red if it were the only one available.
Licorice is the finest candy on earth. Black (real licorice) certainly has the edge in my book but I like the red stuff too (though, it's not really licorice). For black I prefer Panda licorice ... http://www.panda.fi And for red - old fashioned red vines. Reportedly, Bruce Arena is a great fan of red vines.
This thread is a couple years old... but I never saw it. My favorite licorice is from Sweden. They're called Licorice Boats, and they're from a company called Aroma. They may be the same company that makes Bilar. Anyway, you can get this at any Ikea... and it's really, really good.
Fenel is great. Anise is good. Anise liquor is marginal. Anise candy is disgusting. Long live Red #5....yeah Red Vines baby!
I'm not a fan of licorice or licoricey things. I've never knowingly encountered fennel. I went looking for it at the store the other day, just to see what it smelled like but I couldn't find it.
Have you ever had Ayacucho aka Hoja Santa, Yierba Santa, Root Beer Plant (its grows commonly in Texas and other parts of the Midwest...although the vast majority of people there don't know to use it or how)? They are fairly similar....great with fish. Quite subtle...unlike licorice, ouzu & aguardiente.
yeah theres a ton of green dye in black licorice. if you take a warm black crow (licorice candy) and stretch it you will see that its not black at all, but green!
As a kid I used to chew on the licorice root. Was ok but you couldnt swallow any of it and after a while there'd be a load of fibres in the recesses of your mouth.
How many people actually enjoy black licorice in this day and age? I like the Twizzlers pull and peel, although that doesn't really qualify.
