I assume they inflate their #s like everyone else but good to see Wal-Mart rolling it out in all MLS markets(shows they were successful last year).
How on earth is MLS ranked ahead of MLB? And, according to the article, MLS is. Do MLB teams control their own licensing? Sachin
Re: Re: License! Magazine Top 100 Leading Licenses I may be wrong (shocker) but I think teams and the league are counted seperately in MLB, which is a big reason why there are such labor problems. In baseball, the Yankees control their merchandise and the Devil Rays control theirs and the league does league-wide stuff. In the NFL, there is NFL properties which handles a lot of things for the individual teams, thereby making everything an NFL brand. That's why when Jerry Jones wanted to do his own thing, the other owners said No because they are in it together.
Kind of sucks that MLS is getting clobbered by Marykate and Ashley and Britney Spears, though. I suppose Landon isn't pulling enough weight with those teen girl dollars.
XARA MLS partnership Dunno about those uniforms, but whatever. Any presence in youth leagues is good.
The XARA partnership could be huge...little league has done this for years in many towns and it will get MLS Names in front of tons of kids every year and the free poster is a nice side package
This is true... My first Little League Football team was the Timberlake Lions and we had our helmets look like them. Which is why I rooted for the Lions along with the Steelers until I figured out how much they sucked. Sachin
Re: Re: Re: License! Magazine Top 100 Leading Licenses Now, I understand the players' associations in MLB and NFL (Quarterback Club?) have their separate licensing agreements. Do MLS players have an equivalent or are their images/likeness (bobbleheads, for example) sold under the MLS license?
Right, a lot of the licensing monies go to the individual teams and a HUGE chunk goes to the MLBPA. I think it's a better set up since it encourages the separate entities to seek out revenue streams in competition with one another.
I'm sorry, I didn't even open the link, but this has to be in error. First, 2002 has come and gone and no sign of the Video (I don't believe). Hence, $0 sales. Second, wouldn't it be $85 thousand, anyway? Certinaly not $85 MILLION. They could increase each team's salary cap 3 or 4 or 5 fold with those kind of numbers alone. I'm missing something. Actually, I'm probably not missing anything by not clicking on the link.
Re: Re: License! Magazine Top 100 Leading Licenses It's total sales, not license revenue. The viedo was just one part of it. If you read the link, you would know.
Total sales, licensing revenue, who cares? $85 million in sales for 2002 (not 2003 you'll note) is presposterous to me. $85 million for a MLS music video "year in review"? Ha! At $50 a pop they'd have to sell 1,700,000 units to reach those figures. Not a chance. They'd be lucky to sell 17,000. This league would be in the black (that's positive, isn't it?) if it were true, and on the way to a 16 team league by 2004/5, and even bigger and better things beyond that. Makes no sense at all to me, but i'm probably just thickheaded. edit: well, looking at the box again, i guess the $85 million in total sales could include the Wal-mart deal, the video sales and the jerseys all included. it looks ambiguous to me. it still seems absurd to me. feel free to scour my thickheadedness.
$85 million in revenue certainly is plausible. It's not the same thing as $85 million in profits. I'm sure MLS's share of the profits is pretty low. Sachin
i know it's not the same as profits. but you think by selling a few shirts at wal-mart and some music videos of great goals they're going to generate $85 million in sales? somebody would have to convince me.
FlashMan, have another cup of coffee. Maybe that will do something for your thickheadedness. They're talking about total sales for all MLS licensed goods. It's not just the three deals listed in the report. Not profits. Not revenues to MLS. How many jerseys, balls, video games, videos, calendars, etc. does it take to make 85 M$ of retail cost?
my problem, of course, is no sleep and TOO MUCH coffee. well, like i said above. if you average all those at a $50/per unit sales cost, you'd need to sell 1,700,000 units. still seems like a lot to me. a HELLUVA lot. maybe MLS' merchandising power far exceeds what i previously imagined. and if so, how about raising the salary cap mr. garber?
? You have a problem with the famous kelly green and navy blue Fire uniforms? Can't remember - isn't that what the team wore in that notable game which had the Crew wearing the lilac and purple combo?
