Draft Picks? We don't need no steenking draft picks. The team we need to mimic is the 2001 Miami Fusion. They did a lot with their money, picking up Pineda Chacon and Bishop from the outside, along with Llamosa, Henderson and Preki from within the league. The players they had to work with were Pablo Mastroeni, Diego Serna, Jim Rooney, Tyrone Marshall, Nick Rimando and Ivan McKinley. I think our returning core of Walker, Pope, Jolley, Clark, Gaven and Magee (throw in Leitch too), stacks up fairly well with that. By the way, the building block for the 2001 Fusion was that they made it to the 2000 Open Cup final...and lost. Sound familiar. When you examine Fusion, they did not have a stellar 2001 draft....to say the least. 1st Round. No pick 2nd Round. Ali Ngon. 3rd Round. No pick. 4th Round. Greg Simmonds, Corey Gibbs. 5th Round. Teofilo Cubillas. 6th Round. Daouda Kante. Somehow, not a single draft pick made their team and they put together a Supporters Shield Winning Side. What did they have? Tons of cap room. That is what we've got going for us. This should be our inspiration. Two good foreigners, two or three trades where we can take away players from teams with cap problems and we should be good to go. On my wish list. Tenywa Bonseu (Pope will be in a lot of Quallies) Carlos Pavon. No Name Euro vet midfielder (30-31) with leadership qualities. Frankie Hejduk. Jovan Kirovski.
