Let me first say that a huge company like Red Bull taking an interest in this market is nothing but a positive development for this league. But here's the problem: When Red Bull sells this team in a few years, we will have to change the name of the team again. The Red Bull guys seem like agressive dedicated marketers, and they seem to know something about soccer, but much like Don Garber, they seem to have a tin ear (Real Salt Lake, Houston 1836, Chivas USA, etc.) when it comes to what will work in the United States. They need to be educated. They need to be educated by us and by the people who they have gathered to help them run this team (Beckenbauer, Chinaglia, Messing, & Roth). As we have learned from the Houston 1836/Houston Dynamo situation, team names can change very, very fast in MLS if there is enough public pressure to do so. So right now, we have New York Red Bulls, but we also have a little more than three weeks until Opening Day. About the same amount of time it took to re-brand the Houston team. What I am suggesting is letting the Red Bull guys know that naming the team after their product is not acceptable. It's not acceptable because history shows that corporations don't hold onto sports teams forever. Corporations sell teams all the time. We need to let them know that we want a team name that will last beyond their ownership tenure. They can name the stadium "Red Bull Arena". Fine. They can put Red Bull logos on all the uniforms. Also fine. They can dress up the new team in Red Bull colors. Fine again. But the name of the team should not be Red Bulls. We need to do here what the Mexican community did in Houston. We need to torpedo the "Red Bulls" name before it goes much further. As I have said many times on these boards, the name of this team should be "Cosmos." That is the name that should last for the next 100 years and beyond, no matter who owns the club. We have a choice as a community here. We can either let the Red Bulls name happen to us -- and therefore know that another name-change will come in a few years -- or we can help empower Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Shep Messing and Werner Roth to go to their new corporate benefactor and request that the "Cosmos" name be resurrected. That is the choice. Let's "Dynamo" the Red Bulls!
