The Bundesliga site did a profile. Doesn't seem to be much new here but figured I'd share anyway: Born to an American Air Force veteran father and German mother in Berlin, Maloney joined the Union academy at the age of 13 in 2012. ... So highly is he rated in the German capital that in April 2019 he signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 2021. https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bunde...ion-berlin-s-american-defender-usa-usmnt-4869
the 1st one is like good chunk of German-American, USA father, German mother and the father was in the military. the 2nd one isn't new, it was announced as a 2 year extension when he renewed in April. Although 2 years is a low number tbh, even more so if he goes on loan next season which forces him to impress given limited time. And if he doesn't get loaned out than he has to impress tremendously in Summer camp for a player with 1 pro game (played last season) to displace other CBs who have actual experience and were the ones who helped Union get promoted. So he seems more likely to be a back up option. career wise, he needs a loan given that he spent all season training (only playing friendlies) and focusing on his school which delayed his pro career. He's not the 1st nor last German player who will delay their pro careers due to school.
So would it have been likely for him to have gone on loan this past season if not for his focus on school?
fwiw. "Playing for the United States is one of my greatest dreams. Of course it's also nice to play for Germany. But deep inside my heart, I really want to play for the USA. I don't know why, this feeling is just there." - Lennard Maloney (19, Union Berlin) pic.twitter.com/3gjAOM3P25— USMNT Only (@usmntonly) May 30, 2019
Just for the record, the quote in that tweet, which I assume was noticed by that Twitter account because of the Bundesliga article posted a bit higher up, was given to American Soccer Now more than a year ago. http://americansoccernow.com/articl...lin-lennard-maloney-eyes-international-future Union will be in the B1 next season, but Maloney didn't get a B2 appearance for them this season. With that said, he doesn't turn 20 until October.
of course he said that after not being good enough for Germany and only playing some friendlies and besides that his idol is another Berlin German-American in Brooks. good chance for that yes. Now it might be tougher for a player with only 1 relevant game in 2 seasons.
Ok. Not a very large graduating class. It looked like it could have been Berlin's version of the Bachelorette.
everything seems to point towards a loan. Could end up being as low as RL loan. Recently Union loaned out 2 inexperienced players to RL club Cottbus (relegated from 3rd Liga last season). if he goes to RL or 3rd Liga loan it's likely to guarantee he gets game time as a starter, no guarantee whatsoever of that for a 2BL loan. Even 3rd Liga loans aren't always guarantee of playing time. reminds me again why no II team is always a bad thing and even worse when those type of clubs get promotion to 1BL. Inexperienced youth players end up out of place at the club.
Maloney is not at the Austrian camp and seems to be looking for a new club. Looks like Maloney could be headed to 3rd Liga due to the local player rule, that players you loan out have to be min 3rd Liga. The current 1st team of Union is 35 players with matchday squads of 18, yeah would never have worked for him.
my post is about loaning him, he fits the local player and if you loan out such a player it's min 3rd Liga.
could be headed to RL West club RW Essen. Although seems like Union would prefer 3rd Liga. What doesn't help is that 3rd Liga starts this weekend. RW Essen currently only have 3 CBs. Seems like if he signs in RL, Maloney won't count as a local player and they will likely have to "promote" someone from U19 to get the requirement. RW Essen is being coached by Wood's ext coach Titz. "Lennard has been with us for a few days and has left a good impression so far, so he'll play in the match against Offenbach as well," says Jörn Nowak, Sporting Director, "if and how long he will play at RWE, on RevierSport demand. https://www.reviersport.de/artikel/rwe-testet-nachwuchsspieler-von-bundesligisten/
game ended 2-2. 60.: Viererwechsel auf rot-weisser Seite: Platzek, Hahn, Condé und Dahmani gehen vom Feld. Dorow, Selishta, Maloney und Erwig-Drüppel ersetzen sie. #rweofc— Rot-Weiss Essen (@rot_weiss_essen) July 20, 2019
looks like Rot Weiss got some 00 Austrian CB from Hoffenheim, which does put some doubt on Maloney moving there.
failed his trial? According to kicker he reported back yesterday to Union Berlin. if that is the case, wonder how much his year off hurt him as a player?
only played the 1st half in an eventual 3-3 draw. 14 Uhr geht’s los: Im Baltic Sea Cup treffen wir auf den @FCNordsjaelland. Hier sind die Aufstellungen.#fcunion #eisern #balticseacup pic.twitter.com/9n4cSEsh1r— 1. FC Union Berlin (@fcunion) August 20, 2019
seems like he failed 2 trials and now transfer market is closed and still at Union. Looks like he could risk not playing any competitive games until Winter.
