Lennard comes on in the 89th, leading 2-0 and down a man, to help finish this one off.

The twice-capped player was in the thick of the action with 81 touches, completed 66 out of 73 passes, created one chance, accurately fired four out of six long balls out of the back, won his only tackle and five out of eight duels, three clearances, two blocks and intercepted one pass. His only notable fault did, however, help to give their guests a lifeline near the end of the game.

Lennard subbed off in the 67th minute, 1-0 loss. Honestly, outplayed by the RBL midfield - but that's somewhat to be expected. May he enjoy the rest next week.

Maloney starts! Heidenheim visiting Gladbach {Scally also starting}. My schematic has Maloney not in his usual spot, but further advanced (and wider) in a 4-2-3-1. Perhaps someone watching can confirm.

Maloney played the whole match, but in a double pivot with Schoppner and Wanner at the #10 instead. Might have been fun if Lennard had really been the right wing as Scally played left back, but no.

Average Maloney match - solid enough, but the midfield and the whole team were outplayed by Gladbach - 67-33 possession advantage. 3-2 BM win.

Lennard played 75 minutes as Heidenheim were apparently outplayed by Hertha Berlin, which can't be good. Hopefully they didn't care about the Pokal much. Yikes.

Maloney picked up a yellow card late in the first half, but he played the full match and Heidenheim won 0-2.

He's probably going to have to move to a decently higher club to have a shot at a call up

Tansfermarkt lists him as a Nations' League winner, so he's played internationally but he'll have to move to a regular UEFA side to get regular call ups.

Scally's been an automatic starter for fringes-of-the-UEFA-places, Gladbach, for 4 seasons now and he a full back on both flanks. He's still only got 19 caps.

He needs to be more dynamic. Players get called up from mediocre teams all the time - this window had a Barcelona reserve player and 2 guys from the Championship.

Maloney's issue is that his entire game is defending. He doesn't pass well, he doesn't dribble well, he doesn't score, so his potential role internationally is very limited.

Same criticism applies to his club career. Not a lot of pure d-mids kicking around the upper echelons of the game.

Eh Scally plays at a weak position while the midfield is full of players playing at pretty solid levels.

Perhaps he is moved back to CB with his new club and then become almost an automatic callup.

Proving once again that a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous score, they lost 5-2 with Lennard playing 84".
