Please use this thread for pre-game articles and discussion of players, tactics, field conditions, officiating, crowds, etc.

    What/When

    • Houston Dynamo host the Philadelphia Union at Robertson Stadium on Thursday, November 3rd, at 7:30 pm CDT.Barring an unlikely scenario of Houston advancing and Colorado coming back from 2-0 down to advance, this will be Houston's final game at Robertson.

    TV/Video

    • This game will be available on ESPN2 and DEP.

    Radio/Audio

    • In Spanish: La Ranchera 850 AM. They do not stream online.

    • In English: I am not sure right now, will try and update

    Playoff Beards

    The Game

    • This the first round of the MLS playoffs. This season there is a play-in round as well that does not directly affect the Dynamo. This will mark the return to post season action for Houston after missing last year. This marks Philadelphia's first foray into the playoffs. The Dynamo finished the season with 49 points and the Union with 48 points.

    • This round of the playoffs is determined on aggregate scoring. The Dynamo head into this match up with a 1 goal lead; therefore a draw or better advances Houston to the conference finals. A loss by more than 1, eliminates Houston. A loss by exactly 1, will result in a 30 minute mini-game. If the mini-game results in a draw, penalty kicks will determine the team to advance.

    • The Dynamo and Union have met three times this season. In the season opener, a 5th minute goal propelled the Union to a 1-0 win at Robertson stadium. Tally Hall had approximately 47 saves. IIRC the sky was falling. Highlights. In early August, a late Geoff Cameron goal salvaged a point in Chester, this point essentially gave Houston the home field advantage in this 2 leg playoff match. Highlights. This past Sunday, the Dynamo recorded their first ever win against Philadelphia, a 2-1 victory at PPL Park. Goals by Andre Hainault and Calen Carr, coupled with a Dynamo team record 10 saves by Tally Hall proved to be the difference.Highlights.

    • The Union feature a roster of impressive names, there is a French guy who already scored on us, a couple of guys who used to be the future of US Soccer, and some other dudes.

    • Both teams will have players holding yellow cards in this match. If they draw another yellow and their team advances, they will miss the conference final. For the Dynamo those players are Danny Cruz and Adam Moffat. For the Union those players are Gabriel Farfan, Stefani Miglioranzi, Sheanon Williams and Brian Carroll

How did y'all like Carr as a starter? Wouldn't it be amazing to see him come off the bench at the 60th minute with a tired Philly defense ala Chicharito w/ Man United? His speed with an already worn out defense would be superb. However, I doubt Dom would do that considering how effective he was as a starter. One thing is for sure...Ching and Costly starting together should not happen.

If Cruz and Moffat do not get a yellow this Thursday but were to get one in the conference finals would they miss the cup or do they reset after this upcoming game?

First of all, lets stop looking that far ahead.

To answer your question, if it is like in years past (and I am not sure that it is), only a red card can suspend you for MLS Cup.

Yeah, absolutely nothing has been won yet. Less than a total minute of brilliance can erase the current aggregate advantage.

don't worry I have appeased JoBu for all possible bad karma from speculative comments regarding us advancing. We should be fine for Thursday right now-as long as that kid from El Paso doesn't start posting again.

I was thinking that...but couldn't remember if that was due to accumulation or "kick"-I think 2007 was b/c of "the kick"

I'd like to see everything the same honestly. Would love to figure out a way to get Carr off the bench to exploit tired defenses, but I'm not sure one of Costly or Bruin is a viable starter as things are. Just an opinion.

Found this on the Colorado Rapids Website

I can't find where the MLS offically stats the disciplinary rules for the playoffs.

    Or
    Houston Dynamo 2 - 0 Phily

They changed the rule in I think 2008 - if you carry a card into the conference final, a second yellow in that game does not suspend you for the MLS Cup Final.

It was changed to avoid the Rico Clark scenario again - a weak yellow given by idiot Brian Hall put him out of the 2006 Final.

Go figure that would be on Colorado's website. With the likes of Mastroni and Casey you got to keep those disciplinary rules handy.

I'd like to see them get rid of this yellow card accumulation thing completely for the playoffs. Having to sit out of the conference final because of a yellow in 2 hard fought consecutive games in the semis seems a bit harsh and has a negative impact on everyone, especially the fans. I'm still ok with red card suspensions, just not this yellow accumulation crap.

I know it is a weeknight game, and that is tough on many.

But it would really be swell if folks could get there early and get some energy going in the stadium before the start of the game -- as Phily fans did Sunday.

I expect Philadelphia to come out flying and intense. I hate the idea of Dynamo players coming out and not feeling a crowd as much behind them as Phily's crowd was behind the Union Sunday.

I would have to agree-we play better as underdogs, coming from behind.

    remember Red Bull?

Plus they are too Le Toux to quit

As already stated, I think Rico could answer that question.

I thought WE were the thugs of the league? We should have that posted in the locker room right?

Don't know if it's good but one thing's for sure. He won't start with the formation he started with in the first half. He'll push Miglioranzi (sp?) up more from the get go. I don't see the Dynamo enjoying as much possession as they did in the first half of the game in Philly.
