Yeah, he was certainly marketable as a cosmopolitan, stylish guy of Vietnamese descent with flair on the field as well. But from what I understand the V-League was and remains fairly nascent with little if any talent which would see much game time in MLS, let alone Eredivisie.
Yeah, that's a more than fair comment. A look at the top scorers* in the V-League in the last decade has a series of guys whose previous highlights were stints as squad regulars - not starters - at nothing teams in the Argentine or Portugese D2. None of them were ethnic Vietnamese with pedigrees remotely close to Nguyen's (PSV academy, PSV pro contract, regular starter in Danish D1), which is why he was such a star in Vietnam. Maybe those guys could have got MLS gigs during its 2000-02 doldrums. They wouldn't get a look in now. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V.League_1#Top_scorers
Not that reputable, but MLS Transfers said Southampton was in attendance for one of the ECF legs and MLS Cup. MLS Transfers says they were not impressed. He/she said Fulham was also at a fews games lately of Nguyen's, but he/she doesn't know what they thought when they went to see him.
There have also been a whole bunch of CONCACAF players in the V-League over the years. There's been a lot of movement back and forth between the V-League and the US lower leagues in the last 5 years, mostly Caribbean players but also a few Americans. Their records in the two leagues suggest that the V-League is about the same level as USL Pro right now.

We have SOURCES talking about his possible exit??? http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/...ion-orlando-city-battling-it-out-for-robinho/ “A new club has stepped in [for Robinho] – MLS Cup finalists, the New England Revolution. Sources indicate that Jermaine Jones’s team is interested in securing the addition of Robinho to compensate for the possible exit of Lee Nguyen. There are two other clubs in pursuit of the player – but they do not play in MLS, they are Atlas and Tigres of Mexico.”
Gotta say that those three years at PSV probably reassures quite a few that he has the proper tactical training. After that the 22 goals and 8 assists in 40 games this year must turn a few heads. I just don't think that he'll be cheap enough for the clubs that might want to take a stab at him nor will he risk his WC chances for any old offer. NE also won't want to let him go. They're getting Henry/LD/Keane like performances from him. He'll stay out his contract at NE and get a DP offer in 2017.
He is 28 and failed in Europe with little usmnt esp. 1.5m would be absolute tops what an insane team would pay. It would more like 750k and NE isnt giving him up fot less than 3ish. Lee Nguyen Soccer Player Lee Nguyễn, born October 7, 1986 is an American soccer midfielder for the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer. Nguyen holds dual citizenship in the United States and Vietnam. Wikipedia Born: October 7, 1986 (age 28), Richardson, Texas, United States Height: 5' 8" (1.73 m) Salary: 44,000 USD (2012) Education: Indiana University Bloomington
I'd like to see it happening, for him, to see what he's really made of, but the reality is that he's a bit too old and with far too few MNT games for the sorts of Euro teams that would sign an American with his profile who's circa 25 with a view to selling him on (PSV. Ajax, Porto). If he can get a DP deal in MLS, where he's rapidly become a star, he should take it and maybe then take another stint in Vietnam for a final payday. Like Peter O'Toole advised an aspiring Michael Caine, "Better Hamlet in Nottingham than Laertes in the West End."
With Mix over in Mexico, why not Lee? I wouldn't mind seehing him sign for a DP level deal in a league that fits his strengths. That would be neat, too.
If Lee is going to be a serious piece heading towards 2018(I'm not convinced), I worry about playing on that crap surface in NE the next four seasons and the effect that can happen. He's in a good situation, although underpaid. If a team in France would offer him a good raise and he wanted to go, I would consider it. If his goal is the 2018 WC, I wouldn't turn down a good opportunity at a higher level if it came along. He's too old for Holland, won't get a WP in England, isn't good enough to get much time in the Bund but if a Serie A or Ligue 1 club wanted to take a chance, could be good. Still, I'm not as high on him as others. There's such a lack of 10's in our pool that his ability gets overstated IMO.
Possibly back to Vietnam?: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017...-nguyen?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter The report claimed that that FLC Thanh Hoa are in touch with Nguyen’s father about a potential deal. Nguyen played two years in Vietnam before joining the Revolution in the 2012 season, becoming a major star in the country and racking up gaudy statistics for a pair of clubs.

Can't believe his guy is 33 years old already. It seems his short stint with PSV was distant memories.
