Considering his rather long tenure in Vietnam, I am wondering how good he will be here. He very well might flop Jarju-style, hopefully his wage isn't too high.
Yep. A weighted lottery in the near future will determine his club. Clubs are able to opt out. The league wouldn’t have signed him without a few clubs saying they’d be willing to claim him.
The lottery will be held this afternoon. Clubs interested in Nguyen: Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC, Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles Galaxy
The Whitecaps won the rights to Lee Nguyen in the lottery. “We’re very excited to add a talented player like Lee,” Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie said in a statement. “He’s a young player with a bright future. We look forward to seeing him in preseason.”
Nguyen eager to take on new challenge at Vancouver Good interview to wrap up Nguyen's current stint as a YA. Perhaps he will return to our domain some day (Hard to believe he is only 25. Seems to have been around forever)
Seems that some club in Vietnam wants him back: http://www.thebentmusket.com/revolu...nguyen-mls-vietnam-flc-thanh-hoa-silly-season Vietnamese club FLC Thanh Hoa are looking to sign Lee Nguyen, according a report from local outlet Bongdaplus. Link: http://bongdaplus.vn/tin-bai/3/129608/lee-nguyen-sap-gan-duyen-voi-flc-thanh-hoa.bdplus This is the second time in recent history that a V-League team has expressed interest in acquiring Nguyen as Hanoi T & T made public claims in December. Thanh Hoa, Nguyen's most recent suitor, is hoping to make the 28-year-old attacker the centerpiece of their team. The club has recently become one of the biggest in Vietnam as they have shown a willingness to spend.
He makes $175k: https://public.tableau.com/profile/.../2015MLSBaseSalaryDashboard#!/publish-confirm Doubt Vietnam can match that.
Reports were that he was making 500k/yr his last stint in Vietnam. So if this new team is willing to spend I am sure he will make as much as his last contract or more. I know he wanted to come back to prove he could play and also try and get back into the national team so I don't know if he'd want to move back now, especially with the possibility of playing in Copa America or WCQ next year.
They can match/surpass it with sponorship money/endorsements. The question is, does he want money right now, or will he stay playing in MLS and keep trying to make the NT? Not to mention living in the US which is something he missed when he was over there last...
It is worth mentioning that Lee and the Revs have had contract disagreements this season. This vietnamese team maybe can take advantage of that turmoil. However, I kind of doubt that he will go back since he is one of the best players on a playoff team.
Agudelo makes circa $440k. Based on what I've seen this year, the Revs should offload Agudelo in the offseason and give Nguyen his salary. As for going back to 'Nam, it depends on what Nguyen's ceiling in MLS and the MNT is. If he's already reached it then he's unlikely to get European offers that would make uprooting himself to start over again worthwhile - $300k IMO. 'Nam makes a lot more sense. He may have missed life in the USA, but if he was grossing $500k last time, he could easily top $650 now. He'll get close to the same salary from his club over there, plus a shedload more in endorsements and sponsorship - star of a playoff team, Gold Cup squad member for the US MNT, recycle a few quotes from ex-Bundesliga star Jermaine Jones, etc. That part of the script writes itself. Add in the possibility of not-for-cash payments (rent-to-buy deal on your accommodation, luxury car is yours at the end of your contract, etc.) and under the table payments that the IRS can never prove and 'Nam looks very enticing. 4-6 years at that gross income, and you've got a set-for-life bank balance with early retirement at 33.
Since you name is not The Vietnamese Rover, I have to ask how you got to be such an expert on the Vietnamese league. Or are you just guessing?
Extrapolating, based on articles and other people's posts. Like everyone else on Big Soccer. Like you have - many times.
Like you have - many times.
I doubt that.
Yeah, I don't think Agudelo is going to stay with the Revs on that salary, with his current level of performances.
