Queretaro are eliminated with 0 points So Wednesday truly could be a scrubs match if mls results tomorrow eliminate rsl
Yeah, the guys from tonight's bench for sure. Quinton and Henry in the middle, Junqua on the right. Wolff and Piol for 90. Marquez plays. Kirkveit in goal. EDIT: Hidalgo again on the right. Piol and Berea both in. That's nine and just missing some d-mids. Kirkveit Hidalgo Henry Quinton Junqua ?? ?? Marquez Berea Wolff Piol
Juarez taking it to cinci is not what I expected Game is getting chippy well that turned around fast 2-2 now
I can’t be bothered to figure it out myself. Are we pretty much out yet? Is Wednesday a dead-man-walking game?
We are in 12th, but only two teams currently have six points: Portland and Seattle. At +5 and +9 goals we could almost certainly not catch them. That leaves two spots to compete for, and we'd have to have EIGHT other results go our way and we would have to win by multiple goals. But Tuesday night, only two teams ahead of us - Columbus on four points and NYCFC also on three but ahead on the tie breaker - play. LAFC is right below us and plays that night too (having scored fewer goals than us). Orlando's game should end Wednesday before ours, and Miami and Minnesota right when we start. But that may not be enough to certainly close the door before we have to post a starting XI.
Not mathematically. The only teams we can't better are Seattle and Portland (unless LA comes from behind to beat Cruz Azul). There are 6 teams on 4 or 5 pts that would be impossible to catch if they win, though, so it seems really unlikely that we could get one of the last 2 spots.
We can’t jump Seattle and Portland even if we won 13-0 The first tiebreaker is wins. Rsl doesn’t have any. Both those teams have 2 I am surprised that there is this much of a chance to advance, but it’s still minuscule
I'm guessing we put out a lineup that is trying to win and hoping to advance. I don't think we will advance but we are playing a team that is sitting on 0 points and is mathematically out. They seem likely to be resting players.
That's likely, but I wonder how much the FO will push back given they have a game Sunday, 5th game in 15 days situation (need to rotate) and MLS standings are arguably more important.
RSL really blew a chance to advance. If they had won they would have been in 4th place with 5 points and guaranteed to stay there with a victory over Queretaro on Wednesday. Such a shame but that's pretty much how this season has gone. I was really surprised with the results on Sunday and thought RSL would have been already done and dusted. It was a frustrating game to watch compared to how well RSL played against CA. Maybe after the first goal they let down a bit and and thought, like I did, that this might be a 3-1 or more victory for RSL. As it turns out, not so much. The fact is that the attack sucks for whatever reason. Agada is not a guy that will score you a ton of goals from a traditional set up. He really look like a guy that is your 2nd or 3rd option that wants to vacuum up all of the balls bouncing around in the box. He's a scrapper. A clean up guy. He's not your number one at least with this group. Diogo doesn't seem like he can exist in the same universe as Luna. They seem to find themselves in the same space all the time. If Diogo wasn't a DP I bet he gets the Pablo treatment and spends a lot more time on the bench but that hasn't been the case. I really think that he is more of a set up guy and might thrive with more technical players above him in the attack. That may be wishful thinking but at this point that's the best I can come up with. This is harsh but as DP's go he's the Bode Hidalgo of DP's on this team. Speaking of Bode. Never mind. Marczuk has really been a surprise this season and not in a good way. He can't get around anyone on the field or to get on the field. He can't go left and he struggles with total commitment to play both offense and defense. Although I thought that Bode and Marczuk were somewhat dangerous going forward in this game and the right side was more cohesive. It looked like Agada was sticking to the middle of the field and not give the left side any options moving forward because he was in the middle instead of moving out to the left to be an option like Gozo was doing on the other side. In a sarcastic way I am kind of glad that Piol hasn't hit any of those bike's he's tried to hop on because if he did RSL would reward him with a multi-year contract that would be a burden moving forward to try and get out from under. Gozo was everywhere. Brennan asked me if Marczuk should get subbed out at half and I said yea, for Russell. Russell came in and made a difference and is the reason that RSL had a chance to even walk away with 3 points. He manufactured the PK and the last minute foul for the free kick. In the post game I think Pablo made if perfectly clear that he's just not going to give Johnny any significant minutes because he is too old to play defense or something along those lines. I'm not necessarily disagreeing but I would definitely play him more. I also wouldn't worry about him playing a ton of defense. There are 11 guys out there I think you might be ok if one doesn't need to from one side to the other or one end to the other every minute. That first goal from SL was really nice. But again, how do players get so wide open like that? The play was a nice counter and Glad and Bode seemed to be trying to figure it out but wide open near the spot is not a great look. I actually randomly ran in to Caliskan before the game. He was outside the main entrance on the West side waiting for a ride. He is working through that quad issue. It sounded more annoying than anything. I wouldn't play him on Wednesday if he would be good to go in NY on Sunday. He also seemed pretty stoked and enthusiastic about making the RB position his. I gave him a podcast sticker because why not. He asked if he should listen and I said yea, he's one of our favorite players which he seemed a bit surprised. But I told him we were glad he stepped up and took the RB job because we were tired of talking about how RSL doesn't have RB. He also seemed to agree that you should never not have a RB considering the nature of the position. He had nothing negative to say about anything and we didn't talk about anyone else. I'm still a little shocked that RSL really blew it with not getting the 3 points but it is what it is.
You to n the FO is talking to Pablo at that level? I don’t. I think this decision (rightfully) site with Pablo and his staff. If I was in his shoes I’d rotate some but still field starters. The last thing you’d want is to have had the opportunity to advance on 6 points but shit the bed at home against an eliminated scrub team
I'm worried he doesn't rotate enough and it costs them points on Sunday. I'd play the odds; extremely unlikely to get through with 6 points and not very likely to continue their 16 points from 7 MLS games form.
Red Bull play against Juarez on Thursday. Juarez is on 5 points and has been arguably the most interesting liga mx team in this so far. Red Bull are on 4 points, so they are juggling this same dilemma. They play Thursday. i don’t know what the right answer is, but there are a lot of reasons to go at the game Wednesday. There are some to rest and go hard at Sunday’s. It depends what you see as more worth chasing. Im not a big fan of this tournament, ive said that a lot, but a road mls regular season game just isn’t at the same level to me. Could those points prove valuable at the end of the season? Sure. But so could potentially advancing in leagues cup
Fair point, but you have to win two games in the knockout round to get anything of note from this tournament. And those extra games come on week days between MLS games, making both harder to win. I'm not saying no to more RSL matches, but we do know that Pablo only pays attention to the next game, for better or worse.
I was thinking tomorrow's results could make the decision easier, but I don't think there's any chance of RSL being mathematically eliminated before Wednesday. The only possible definitive result is Columbus winning, which would put them out of reach no matter how well RSL plays. All the other games tomorrow are of teams with 3 points or fewer, and so even if they all win by 4 goals, they won't be impossible to catch.
Sounds like Pablo is going to play as many starters as possible and have planned half time subs to account for the Sunday game, too.
Columbus won tonight, so now RSL will be competing with 8 other teams for the last spot to advance. If Miami wins tomorrow, RSL will be eliminated before kickoff.
I haven't looked at the tie breakers, but if Miami gets more than one point, RSL is out. Additionally, they need 6 other teams to not get more than 1 point. Oh, and RSL probably needs to win by at least 3 goals.
