So the team who gets a bye as champion doesn’t get full hosting rights? If that’s the case why wouldn’t Cincinnati have gotten the bye?
The top team in Liga MX and 2023 MLS Cup Champions got the Bye. If the rules are the same as 2023 Knockout Round, then the host team would be determined by the 2023 Supporters Shield Standings and the Higher team would host.
Update: I just found this for the determination of Home field in the knockout rounds: https://www.charlottefootballclub.c...o-qualify-for-2024-leagues-cup-knockout-round Hosting is determined by a team's Leagues Cup Ranking. The Leagues Cup ranking will be strictly based on combined MLS and LIGA MX club performance based on points in the last 34 regular season matches. MLS teams will be ranked based on the 2023 MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, while LIGA MX clubs will be ranked based on the cumulative 34 matches in the 2023 Clausura and Apertura tournaments.
Just found this too. Further, 4 Liga MX teams get hosting rights, with Club America hosting every game through the Semis. Makes me think the final is to be at a neutral location or maybe at the MLS side if it's club america vs mls. Monterrey already out and Chivas will be if they lose tonight https://www.leaguescup.com/news/lea...edule-bracket-announcement-presented-by-coors
Correct. With Club América as the #1 Seed, they would host as long as they are in the tournament. The 4 Liga MX teams who have hosting rights: America will play in San Diego Snapdragon Stadium Monterrey will play in Austin Q2 Stadium Guadalajara will play in Santa Clara Levi's Stadium UANL will play in Houston Shell Energy Stadium I haven't found anything about the final game yet.
Toronto wins 2-1 Round of 16 opponent is either Miami or TFC Tigres and Pachuca play each other in the round of 32 and are potential quarterfinal opponents
Chivas loses in penalties and is out. The three teams left that would have hosting rights over the Crew are FCC, Orlando and Club America. A match against America would not take place until the final. If FCC loses to NYC tomorrow, they would fall into the Crew's quadrant and would need to beat the Pachuca-Tigres winner to host Columbus in the quarterfinal. If FCC wins tomorrow, the Crew would host until at least the semi-final round. FCC or Orlando would need to also advance to that round for it to be an away match.
I don't see any way Toronto beats Miami. Will Messi play the 8/12(ish) game in Columbus? (Assuming we survive our first-round game.) During All-Star, week Garber made a TV comment that the winner of Leagues Cup could get the host nation bid to the FIFA Club World Cup. I thought that was dumb because no way would MLS give 50 million to a Liga Team if they didn't have to. The talking heads didn't ask him a follow-up question. If this is under consideration I want to send Miami packing ASAP.
In about a week? That seems highly unlikely. All he’s started to do is gym work with Miami’s training staff. He’s not stepped foot on the pitch since his injury.
I'm pretty sure Arace had a column where Garber wouldn't confirm the option, but he did cite another journo's question where garber confirmed it would be an MLS team. So those Canadian cheaters might get a team in. The most popular option I've seen is a Supporters Shield vs MLS Cup winner showdown, one or two legged affair. That's what the Athletic keeps hearing. Now one question I still have is where will the league's Cup final be. The publicly available rules mention through the knockouts but weirdly it says America would host through the Semis, but if they advance to the final they should host by those same rules. Further, our tickets say the pre-purchase plan only goes through the Semis. So is this a wait and see what Miami does situation again?
Cincinnati is wearing White with orange and blue highlights. New York is wearing Blue with orange and white highlights. It looks to me like Home Uni's vs Road Unis. Same font and everything. Kinda like when Nashville and Colukbus play.
The final spot in the CWC is for the host nation which is the US, so it won't be a Canadian or Mexican team. If Miami wins any trophy it will be them. Even if they don't, I'd still put it at greater than 50% likelihood that Don gives it to Messi. Meanwhile, the Crew is currently #1 in the Concacaf club rankings, and I think the only way for Columbus to even get consideration would be repeating as MLS Cup champions. It's particularly absurd when you look at the next five teams in those rankings: 2) Pachuca 3) Club America 4) Tigres 5) Monterrey 6) LAFC The Crew have earned results in seven of their eight matches against those teams in the last 12 months, including five regulation wins.
Miami at home isn’t guaranteed to beat Toronto but they definitely would be favored with good reason.
NYC led 2-0 in Cincinnati and has allowed four goals in 10 minutes. The Crew have hosting rights until at least the semifinals.
So basically Garbers' position is that he's not going to decide who the MLS entry is until he sees what Miami manages to win, at which point that will become the qualifying criteria? That's simply corrupt.
It's not the first time. Remember when they didn't announce the playoff format until 2-3 months before the season ended, all because David Beckham needing to make the playoffs with LA? And if Crew fans boycott en masse? "Oh look. I guess MLS was right. Columbus can't support the Crew after all."
The wild card with regards to the CWC is that FIFA completely fumbled the bag by trying to hold out for other offers after Apple offered $1 billion for the global broadcast rights. Apple rescinded their offer to clear the path for....nobody else to bid. So as of now, the event has no TV deal and less than 10 months to figure it out, and the company underwriting a large part of Messi's MLS salary has an axe to grind with the organizers. I doubt Apple is enthusiastic about Miami entering a tournament they don't broadcast, where there's potential for Messi to miss matches that are on their platform if he gets injured or needs rest.
There's a lot of moving pieces happening. The tournament will branch June and July and occur during transfer windows too, meaning teams could lose players mid tournament because contracts expired or due to transfer. For the Champions league during covid, players and teams had less motivation to not sign a short term contract or loan deal to keep players until the end. The constraints of the pandemic are not in play
Almost a bad night for MLS but even having statistically one of the worst years for a GK ever in MLS, Steffen still comes through in the pk shootout and sends Leon packing. Houston really should have put two own goals in for RSL to send atlas home
