They may be perennial also—rans but there are worse Liga MX teams though, like Puebla, Mazatlan, Atlas, etc.?
I’ve always felt that Jebo’s back to goal hold-up play has been good but it was really good last night. Lots of quick combinations between him, Hernán, Espinoza, and Yueill. Also Hernán a lot quicker getting the ball off his feet in traffic. Not going to get too excited yet though because Necaxa didn’t pressure the ball as hard as MLS teams generally do.
No, theyre all about the same level of shit. Soccer mentality is very different in Mexico then here. No one cares if youre a mid table team, they dont even refer to such. Youre either a contender or a jobber. Puebla, Mazatlan, Atlas, Xolos, Juarez and Necaxa are jobbers/losers. The fans of these teams are passive and passuonate at the same time but have an expectency of being sucky.
BTW, I find offensive the insistence on pouring all drinks into cups when Mexican teams play at PayPal but not otherwise.
I do not know much about Liga MX. My exposure was limited to teams like Chivas or Club America when they played against the Quakes or an European team. I was surprised that Necaxa was playing so direct especially the first half. I always thought the Mexican teams like to play with quick short passes and combinations. Do these other "lesser" teams also play that way? Last night we actually faced less pressure overall (and more obvious in the midfield) compared to the times we played against MLS teams. That gave everyone a bit more time to do what they needed to do. The long balls from Necaxa were easily handled by our backline. Necaxa's backline also pushed up pretty high. Once we got the first goal, we took care of things at the back and hit them with counterattack. Apparently Ian Russell did his homework to prepare for the game. Luchi ball would not cut it last night. In the second half, down by 4 goals and a man down, Necaxa defensed deeper and played less direct. That was more damage control. We were also content to just keep the ball and avoid injuries or red cards. I feel that the team actually treated this tournament seriously. Other teams may play their 2nd or 3rd teams but we really didn't have other things to fight for. I hope the team can build some confidence in this tournament and have better showing in the remaining regular league games even we miss the playoffs.
We made it thru the group stage by the skin of our teeth but it was not an easy group round for us. Playing Chivas in front of 50k Chivas fans and then LAG, who totally have our number these days, on short rest. Last night we finally had the wind at our backs, playing a lesser Liga MX team at home when we’re fully rested and they’re on 4 days rest. 4 wins to hardware baby!!
Outside of Chivas, America, Cruz Azul, Pumas, Tigres and Monterrey, most of the Liga MX teams play long ball, direct, park the bus, or counter ball. Liga MX isnt a good league at all. Even Pumas, Cruz Azul and Tigres for as good as they are dont play tiki taka. The bottom of MLS is better then half of Liga MX. But even Chivas and America arent as powerful as they once were. Pumas, Tigres and Cruz Azul are probably the best overall teams in Liga MX. We are better then the Chivas at our best. We should have beat these guys if not for some questionable actions at the end. The Galaxy should have beaten them and would have if they played the starting unit.
Congratulations Quakes fans! (I hope to be able to copy and paste this post a few more times this season.)
I see you’ve never had bottles, cans, shoes, hotdogs, Chris, etc. thrown at you during a Mexican game. I have - more than once. Keep pouring those cups and dumping the cans…
Rules should be applied consistently, not according to ethnicity. Seems like there might be a law against special rules for those of certain nationalities. We'll see on 8/31 whether Minnesota fans get the same treatment.
Necaxa fans were sitting immediately behind me and on the aisle to my right. They were very well behaved, even following multiple goal celebrations.
There weren't many, but I actually felt bad for them by the end. It was a rare chance to see their team locally, and they got hammered by the worst team in MLS. Imagine living in Aguascalientes as a Quakes fan, and the Quakes come and play there for the 1st time in forever. You get all excited and show up in your Quakes gear, and it's over in the 1st 20 minutes. You just have to slink out of the stadium and go home.

I haven't read yet though the "love fest" of posts on the game. It is a nice to have a nice warm feeling after a game. Been a long time! Credit and thanks to Kaitlyn for the post above. Necaxa is not a good team, and overall, MFL has shown that they are being passed by MLS over the past couple of years. To me, it's the speed of play and athleticism of MLS which MFL Team struggle with. To the game, we have seen the Quakes come out on the front foot and get a goal, only to slow down or the other team adjust. The difference in this game was the Quakes kept pushing forward and Necaxa didn't adjust. Necaxa didn't do the following: Pressure our defense Handle transition Left the centerfield wide open on transitions Had a GK who should not be playing in a D1 pro league. I don't want to discredit the effort of Henan, Jebo, and Pelligrino. They played well and deserved the results. However, the GK seems to be stuck in quick sand, his diving technic was poor, and his positioning one one goal was poor. Add the they completely gifted the last goal to PM. I was laughing because it's something that we have seen the Quakes do in the past. Thinking positively, this should give the team some confidence moving forward. Let's see how they play against LAFC when it's not a Levi Stadium.
