The league is going to hold a press conference monday in St. Louis. Ok, it's actualy in St. Charles at the Family Arena. So I'm guess that they will be anouncing the return of the Steamers for next season. My overal guess is that the number of teams will remain the same for next season with the addition of St. Louis and the loss of Harrisburg. harrisburg it's a shame about the heat, but sometimes you need a clean slate. in an article from one of the hampton roads, va, newspapers, it was claimed that each team needed to average 4000 per game to break even. the heat were close to that, but its those pesky undisclosed minimum standards the league requires that make me wonder what the big picture in harrisburg is. hopefully someone can get a team back there in the future
Now it looks like a new group has entered the picture and there is still a slim chance that there will be a team next year. From talking to different people around the league, some of the standards not met were ticket sales (both season tickets/game numbers), sponsorship dollars, front office size and budget items such as advertising. If you don't have a good season base, you become dependent on game day ticket sales for your revenue stream. This has always hurt the Heat, because they go the most of Febuary without a home game and they just scrape by.
