Matthew Doyle @MLS_Analyst Donovan just the 2nd 100/100 man in MLS history, joining Jaime Moreno. Completely forgot about this - but LD earned his 100th assist tonight. No idea how much Moreno has on him, but wow. EDIT: well, I realized he didn't set the record, but earned the 2nd place spot tonight. You guys know what I mean!
Top three all-time goalscorers: Player Goals Assist Jeff Cunningham 134 70 Jaime Moreno 133 102 Landon Donovan 122 100 http://www.mlssoccer.com/stats/alltimeHe's also only the 6th player to hit 100 assists.
Landon Donovan now the 2nd MLS Player in history with 100+ goals and 100+ assists, the other Jamie Moreno. He now has 122 goals and is 3rd all time behind Jamie Moreno with 133 and Jeff Cunningham with 134. His 100th assist is 6th all time behind Steve Ralston (135), Carlos Valderrama (114), Preki (112), Jamie Moreno (102) and Marco Etcheverry (101).
http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/...an-just-keeps-ticking-off-those-achievements/ Documentation for the future.
Landon now has 101 assists, now tied for 5th all time with Marco Etcheverry (101). Next up is Jamie Moreno (102).
Matthew Doyle @MLS_Analyst 200th career professional goal to @landondonovan. Congrats to him - what an incredible achievement.
That puts him 10 goals behind Cunningham and 9 behind Moreno. It also gives him 349 regular season points... 2nd on the all-time points list behind Moreno (368). (Incidentally, Moreno averaged 1.08ppg, while LD averages 1.28ppg) It's not likely, but at the rate he's been going in the last month, but he could pass Moreno this season.
I wrote it, deleted it, wrote it again, deleted it again. If he had scored the two sitters in Vancouver he missed, and had a hat trick tonight, it would have been even closer and given him a shot. Remaining games: 8/5 Seattle Expecting him to miss the 8/12 and 8/15 games due to National Duty 8/26 FCD 9/1 Vancouver 9/14 Colorado (might not get 90 after National Duty) 9/22 Toronto 9/30 Colorado 10/6 RSL 10/21 San Jose 10/28 Seattle With 9 games left, it's going to be difficult to break the record this year. But you never know. 1 hat trick against Toronto and a couple of goals against Colorado later...he'd be close.
If he breaks the points record, I think he should go get hair transplants to celebrate, ala Rooney. I think it would freak everyone out and be awesome.
This is a great article on why we saw passive Donovan in the first part of the year and why that changed to assertive Donovan after the USMNT camp: http://www.mlssoccer.com/all-star/2...ar-chat-arena-rekindles-donovans-passion-form By far the most entertaining line of the article: "combining with fellow Designated Players David Beckham and Robbie Keane to turn the flaccid attack of the season's first three months into something truly explosive" Editor probably should have made the writer change that. =)
This article reinforces why he's my favorite player. He is so candid and honest with his fans and the press it's refreshing. How many players admit this type of thing? Not many. I love his open demeanor and his attitude. He's come a long way from the brash 22 year old he was. Maturity found him, and it's made him a better player and person. Great to see his class and leadership.
With 4 games left he's got a shot at catching Preki and going third all-time. Catching Valderrama is going to be tough with the competition that's left, but hey, who knows? 124 goals 108 assists I would like him to get one more goal this year to hit his first double double since 2005. Right now he's got 9 goals and 14 assists. (Robbie Keane's numbers are also stellar this year.)
LD 9 goals 14 assists Keane 14 goals 8 assists It's almost eerie. And the day that Bruce decided to move LD up top? Best day ever.
^To put those stats in perspective for both Robbie and Landon, there are very very few players that have those types of numbers on the attacking side. And those that do are the elite: Wondo 22 goals 7 assists (basically has MVP nailed this year) Henry 13 goals 9 assists Montero 12 goals 6 assists DeRo 7 goals 12 assists B. Davis 7 goals 11 assists (Zusi - LD's competition for the silver ball only has 3 goals, Rosales only 2). ...and that's it. Which means RK/LD's stats are among the top FOUR in the league. In another year (without Wondo's breakout 2012) - both would be in the running for MVP with Henry. Reminder that Robbie and Landon's stats are also impacted by international duty, and Landon missed a month due to injury. It's impressive. They are the best forward tandem in MLS right now.
