Lazio chairman Ugo Longo categorically denied the news reports that circulated this afternoon indicating that AC Milan had sealed off the transfer of Jaap Stam for 13 million Euros. "These reports are rumours without any backing whatsoever," Longo told Italian website goalcity.com. What is sure is that Lazio are in dire need of cash, and the quickest way to get out of their precarious financial situation is by selling their top stars, Jaap Stam included.
this does seem fairly realistic....Lazio will know their financial situation by june 24..and the mercato opens july 1... Stam for cash and a defender (laursen?) is probably the best bet.... It looked for a while that Stam could stay, but he continues to belittle the club in the media...
maybe not! actually today Baraldi comes out and says both Stam and Stankovic will stay. In truth, selling Stam for 13M does little on a debt thats over 100M...only a new influx of capital will take that clear.... http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun19g.html
phillips, you say the window opens July 1. When does it close? Do you know the rules on types of transfers (free ... loan? ... between leagues? etc) can occur outside of the official window.
I'm not sure, I believe I've read july 1... but now the juve Legrottaglie deal seems set... Love to see those rules is someone finds it...
Transfer Deadlines Well i found this set of deadlines off Globalsoccertransfers.com, but there the ones i heard of when they were imposed by UEFA. Transfer deadline changes starting season 2002/2003 : Europe's 11 leading football leagues ( Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland) have agreed on common transfer window dates to conduct player transfers. This covers both national and international transfers. Transfers can be conducted twice a year. The first transfer period runs from the end of the domestic season to August 31, and the second from January 1 to January 31. For countries with seasons based on the calendar year, such as Scandinavia, the periods would be July 1 to August 31, and December 15 to January 31. Hope it helps. Ciao.
That begs the question - from the end of WHICH domestic season? eg the Spanish liga is still going on, yet Real has apparently signed Beckham, no? All very confusing ...
Actually, Beckham hasn't officially signed for Real yet. He will on July 1st when the transfer window opens. As for Stam, he won't be coming to Milan this year with Cafu already on his way. Where would Stam play? I don't think he would be content with being a bench player.
So, has Legrottaglie not officially signed with Juve since it's not July 1 yet? They are sure making it out to sound like he has. Spartak - or ANYBODY - since you mention July 1 as well, do you have a link to some explanation of the transfer window - what dates it opens and closes, what types of transfers are included and what types can occur outside of those windows?
If Im not mistaken OUTSIDE that period of time teams are allowed to sign only if a player is out for the rest of the season due to injury.
According to reports in the Italian press Lazio coach Roberto Mancini has asked Jaap Stam to stay at the club, but the Dutchman seems unwilling. The defender is frustrated with the financial situation of the Biancocelesti, and says he wants to play 'without problems'. Inter would appear to be in the driving seat to secure the player's signature but Milan should not be ruled out.
The financial situation seems to be cleared up though, and Lazio has insisted they intend on keeping Stam: http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun25e.html
I would have agreed, but with things cleared up now...he will be paid regularly and most likely will stay...
I'd like him to come on to my team..but bieng that Lazio is Champions League bound..well..Stams absense at Lazio would seriously weaken thier squad and I would prefer Lazio to be more successful as they have been plagued with financial difficulties this year. Good luck to Lazio in CL!
