It should be noted that a ratings difference that is less than the SE is not statistically significant. Notice, for example, that the difference between Arizona St. (1831) and Colorado (1735) is less than 100 ratings points, hardly even statistically significant with SEs over 90.
Why is Stanford at #6 with a 3-3-1 record? I haven't been following the rankings much up to this point but I thought this was rather intriguing.
That's a great question! What's amazing is that I actually think I understand why. I've been following both the polls and the Jones ratings for years and I've come to a few conclusions about how they work. What's happening with Stanford is pretty interesting. Stanford has 3 losses (all by 0-1 scores). Two of them are to ranked teams (Pepperdine and Portland), so those don't affect the Jones rating a whole lot, but they do account for Stanford being fairly low in the polls. It's the third loss that's interesting, though - to Georgia. As of 9/22, Georgia was not in any of the polls, nor were they in the top 25 in the Jones rating. In the same week that Stanford lost to Georgia, they also tied the highly ranked Notre Dame. The Jones ratings of Stanford and Georgia (9/22) are: Code: rank record rating SE opp Stanford 6 3-3-1 1998 92 1706 Georgia 55 5-3-0 1688 92 1557 That's a difference of 300 points, so the loss to Georgia was a pretty big upset, but it was offset by a tie with Notre Dame in the same week. The result is that those two results combined don't affect the Jones rating all that much, although Stanford did drop about 50 ratings points during that week. What's surprising is that Stanford actually went up in the poll during the same week. Sept. 15 - NSCAA __24 Stanford University 3-2-0 Sept. 22 - NSCAA __21 Stanford University 3-3-1 So, with a loss and a tie Stanford went up three places in the NSCAA poll, from #24 to #21. Interesting to say the least. The tie was to a highly ranked team, but the loss was to an unranked team - that's the kind of thing that can really confuse the voters. The other thing to remember about the Jones ratings is that it's not rank that's important, but rating. Notice Stanford's rating of 1998 has a standard error of 92. This means there's no statistically significant difference between that rating and a rating of 1906 - which is another way of saying that there's no statistically significant difference between a rank of 6 and a rank of 14. (Washington, with a rating of 1919)

Wow, I guess so. Sounds good to me! I never realized any of that. I thought it was more of a popularity contest of sorts tempered with some sort of 'strength of schedule' factor. I like it - especially since PSU can hang around in the top 10 - just as Stanford at 3 with a not-so-amazing record. Even good teams can lose a game now and then - and sometimes to a much lesser opponent. Thanks much!

The teams that are 2, 3 and 4 in the polls are very close in the Jones ratings. UNC has a considerably higher rating than any of them, though. Stanford has dropped to #12 in the Jones ratings and has fallen out of all of the polls. With the exception of the gap between UNC and Portland, there are no large gaps in the ratings. The power curve seems to be pretty flat.
Where is Virginia? The NSCAA ratings are out and Virginia is no where to be found. Granted they tied Wake at home and only beat James Madison 1-0, but not even any votes? Granted, the poll information was probably entered from NSCAA headquarters in Kansas which explains alot, but no votes for Virginia. I wouldn't want to be their next opponent. http://www.nscaa.com/scripts/runisa.dll?m2:gp::14028+rank/list+D1W+0+10/13/03+Y P.S. Soccer America ranks them 5th.

Virginia is not even in the NSCAA regional rankings for October 13. They were #1 in the regional ranking October 6. It makes no sense unless Virginia was not listed on the ballot for some reason, or the votes for Virginia simply got lost. Virginia is ranked #4 by Soccer Times and Soccer Buzz and #5 by Soccer America.
Virginia is back The folks in Mission Kansas have found their error and a corrected NSCAA poll is available. Virginia is #6. http://www.nscaa.com/scripts/runisa.dll?m2:gp::14028+rank/list+D1W+0+10/13/03+Y

Collegesoccer.com According to the NSCAA rankings on College soccer.com. Texas A&M are still 5th ??? despite losing to an unranked team with a losing record. www.collegesoccer.com Div 1 rankings What's even worse, on the men's side, LMU loses two games and goes up 5 places???? Just shows how accurate these rankings are.
Re: Collegesoccer.com That website still has last week's rankings. Although it says Oct. 20 in large letters at the top of the page, the fine print indicates that those are the Oct. 13 rankings. TAMU was 4th. They dropped to 9th this week as a result, as you say, of losing to an unranked team. The interesting thing to me is Santa Clara, which had been much lower in the polls than in the Jones ratings. This week Santa Clara is up in the polls to about where they've been all along in the Jones rating.
This weeks power ratings. The Albyn Jones ratings are up for this week. The top 10 is starting to make more sense to me as we have more games. http://www.soccerratings.com/W03D1.html See also the related post under ACC.
