Could someone who follows Newcastle a little closer give me some insight into why Hugo Viana has become a very late substitute during the past month and half. Hugo started the season off as a starter for the Magpies, and the couple of times I saw him play, he was impressive. Any input would be appreciated!
Hugo started the season as replacement for Robert, who had an injured back. I think he is really seen by Newcastle as a replacement for Gary Speed, in the centre of midfield. I (and a lot of other supporters) would like to see Hugo start, but Bobby Robson is currently satisfied with Speed's form. If it means anything, Hugo always gets a big reception from the fans when he comes off the bench. (Playing any time at all also means that he will get a financial bonus!) Bobby Robson has hinted that Hugo may start in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, at home to Kiev.
Thanks guys for the update. Viana definitely belongs in the center of the pitch. I can understand why Robson is slowly integrating him into the lineup, though we Portuguese fans are frustrated that he is not getting more of an opportunity. Hopefully, he will get the start this weekend against Kiev and make something happen offensively.
I found some comments from Sir Bobby on Hugo's standing: http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/...fm?objectid=12318126&method=full&siteid=50081
