Well, from the ranking perspective, it looks discouraging but the fact is that we haven't performed particularly well as of late in international competition. Besides, ups and downs will always happen and it is a very dynamic system. Even if Team USA did nothing 'bad', other team results can affect our ranking.

USA ranking will probably go further down since USNMT isn't playing till next year.

However, European teams have 1 game each for Euro qualifiers.

Also, I think in South America there is 1 game each in October for the 10 teams for 2006 WCQ.

No action = no points +/-

Wrong. No action = fewer points. Each month, 1/12 of the results get aged, so you'll have fewer points. The USA, Mexico, and Brasil got a big boost from the Gold Cup. It's now Europe, South America, and Africa's turn for big matches with Euro and WCQ matches.

That would only be true if you played one match a month (I think). A result doesn't lose value until it's at least 12 months old.

You are correct, however, that nations from Europe, SA, and Afirca will start gaining more points because they are having more and more valuable matches.

Ahead of Italy - what's wrong with that?

I say being 11th is just fine. The only team you could argue should NOT be in front of us is Mexico, but they won the Gold Cup and we got 3rd. So - even that is a stretch.

Yeah, i just don't see the big deal about the ranking. sure, everyone would like to say that you are RANKED number 1, but what does it really mean? Is there ANY silverware in the world that is dependent on ranking? Hey, this isn't college football we are talking about. All the winners trophies are actually played for on the field. We should be worried much less about ranking, and much more about the development of talent in the US.

That was quite awhile ago wasn't it? I mean Guardiola was still part of the Spanish squad then. Still, I'd like to see Spain and England play again.

If rankings were dependant on Englands results then Australia would be above us.........just as well then. These FIFA rankings don't mean a thing, I mean does anyone honestly believe the USA are a better team than Italy?

    shhh....

No, not even the Americans think the US is better than Italy. And everyone knows that the FIFA rankings don't mean anything.

I think the better thing to say is "does anyone honestly believe that Italy doesn't belong in the top 10?" Don't pick on the USA specifically. It's not like we're not right about #11 or so, quality-wise.

I don't believe I was picking on the USA, it's my opinion that they shouldn't be in the same company as the teams in the top 15. I don't know how they got to 11th position after losing to Brazils under 23 team in the Gold Cup.
