I mean, Colorado was without Spencer, Chung, the Haitain, the other Cuban, Powell and who knows who else, and they don't have that much offense to begin with. They were playing guys named Cila, Crawford, Digiarmino, to say nothing of some guy named Delgado or Perez (who turned out to be an absolute force of nature as it turned out), it was impossible to tell. Toss in the fact that as the game wore on the stands began to fill with cheering and bouncing Peruvian and Argentinian fans creating quite a ruccus, and who knew what to expect. For Colorado to grab a shock 1-0 lead was surprising enough. But it was just a matter of time before the Metros not only tied but took the lead. But wait! The Rapids storm back in incredible fashion, and the young Chee-la (as Shep would say) grabbed a brace and Borchers nabbed his first goal ever and also added an assist. What in the name of Coors? Made for great theatre, and by the end both Shep and J.P. were practically speechless. Good stuff MLS!!
Methinks Bradley will be running extra drills this week on defending set pieces. "Okay, just because the initial ball isn't played to your man, doesn't mean you can stop marking him. Comprende? Or do we have to do another hour of wind sprints before you grasp the concept?" I sure hope Craig Ziadie plays like this when we face Jamaica in the first qualifier.
I hope the Peruvian and Argentinian in the stands saw something they liked and will want to come back. Sounds like a great game to showcase to possible new fans.
The last two weeks have only reinforced the competitiveness of MLS this year. Last place teams are convincingly beating first place teams and no clear-cut dominant team has emerged. You ever get the feeling that Euro-trolls and Latino-trols secretly like massive inequalities in the sport even if "their" team is always the hapless loser?
the answer to your question ......... yes. because their best teams are so good, they seem to take pride in the global competitiveness of those top 3 or 4 teams. most of us here care more about our league's competitiveness amongst other league teams than we do about our international competitiveness. i guess it's just a difference in philosophy. don't get me wrong though. I do think that as the salary cap goes up a bit, it will be more likely that we get a team or two that is good for a longer period of time and is dominant in season.
There just aren't any worth-while internatial club competitions that MLS teams participate in. The CONCACAF Champions Cup is a joke and other than that, there's nothing. It might be different if MLS clubs ever do participate in Cope Liberadores but that's not happening soon.
I thought it sucked. If it had ended 12 minutes earlier, I probably would have felt differently. I brought 12 first-timers to the double-header as a business boondoggle, and they were feeling pretty good as newly minted Metrostars fans after Galvan Rey's goal. Wanted to hear his life story, why he ran over to hug Gilberto, etc.
This was actually Borcher's second MLS goal. He put one in the back of the net with that big blond melon earlier this season. I never would have thought he'd finish one with his boot like he did on Wednesday though.
Everybody does, it's not just the Euros. The evidence in this country seems to be pretty clear that leagues with dynastys tend to be more popular than parity leagues. Even Garber thinks so.
Borchers hasn't scored a goal since his goal in the playoffs last year....this was his first regular season goal (not to credit Sullivan with the assist on it was also a travesty by MLS). Borchers also picked up an assist in the match...
they didn't give Sullivan an assist? how is that possible? is there any way they can appeal that ruling? (not that in the end it's all that important, but still, justice should be served!!)
Where are you getting this from. How do you glean that from Garber? I know you're big proponent of a free market type system but by 'leagues' are you refering specifcally to the world of soccer?
Hello? NFL ring a bell? Unless you're just talking about the people in the US who are primarily fans of foreign soccer leagues.
according to the official stats, MLS claims the ball bounced off Pope's back on the assist, not off Sully's head, as everyone saw....
