http://www.ussocceruk.com/USsoccerUK_Forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=977&posts=9 Just some guys in England hearing this on the radio. There might be something to it. Everton make £5m (7.5million dollars) bid for Donovan. On the radio just now as I was driving home. Paying the money half to MLS half to Bayer Levekusen.Chris? SA lists Donovan at $2.5 million. Man U got Cristiano Ronaldo for $20 million (I think). I believe Man U would benifit more with L. Donovan than with C. Ronaldo. If they want to conquer the last soccer frontier, then having the best American player with the one of the best American goalie wouldn't hurt. (or the best American defender in Boca wouldn't be bad either). Anyway, in conclusion, it would be interesting how this will unfold. There is a good chance that Landon Donovan will play in Europe in January.
The ONLY team that LD should go to Europe to play for would be Man Utd. Otherwise he would do much more good to the American game staying w/ MLS & being its poster boy w/ Freddy Adu.
Plus if Christiano "The fake wannabe" Ronaldo gets 20 mill to go to Man Utd, Donovan should get THIRTY Million to go to Europe.
Donovan is clearly better than C. Ronaldo, no doubt. Some Euro team (Everton, maybe) will have to pony up money to launder the "American" stain off Donovan for awhile before selling the snot outta him for millions and million and millions... Timmy Howard's "American" stain is being laundered much faster than many in Europe thought. Expect Man U to start getting BIG offers soon for Timmy. they won't sell, of course, but expect them nonetheless. His stain is almost gone already.
So you people think that Landon Donovan is better than Cristiano Ronaldo? I believe Man U has every reason to sign Landon (not only for marketing in America, but also for his talent, though I don't know how he will fit in the team, what position he plays etc...since I am not too familiar with Man U). Anyway, expect offers for Landon Donovan (arguably the best American player right now) from many European teams in this coming January transfer window. It would be interesting. I hope that if when Landon Donovan move to Europe, MLS would get some of the transfer money. Everton: Landon and Rooney (not too bad eh?)
The thing with going to Man Utd (and a couple of other English Premiership teams) is there would be absolutely no guarantee he would walk onto the starting 11. That's why he's been so reluctant to go back to Leverkusen, because of his being stuck in the reserves. A person who is supposed to be one of the shining stars here in the States needs a situation where he is at least a fairly regular sub, if not the first 11. No wallowing in the reserves.
Oh-he'll be lucky to get any playing time..sub at best. And that Howard kid...probably playing lots of reserve football this season. He'll Barthez' backup at best....
Donovans MUCH better than the 17 year old he was a Bayer. Not to mention, a team like Everton is a mid level team at best. Its not gonna help Donovan much to be on a losing team IMO.
How about what Brian McBride did at the beginning of this past season, going to Everton for a short period of time?? And look what kind of impact McBride had over there! That way LD could feel his way around Europe and then decide to stay or come back to the MLS. Would that work with his contract?
Bayer would have to recall him from loan, then loan him out again, then loan him to MLS for the beginning of next year... And that doesn't work with the new FIFA transfer regulations against two moves in a year. Its questionable whether Bayer could even sell him now since the loan to SJ counts as 1 move. Hejduk ran into the problem when he was trying to come back here. He was on loan to a Swiss team and couldn't be bought by MLS to come back, so the Swiss team and Bayer both had to release him on a free for him to come back.
LMFAO @ the EPL having the kind of parity that the NBA has. We ALL KNOW that 1 player may be able to make a HUGE difference in basketball, but soccer is a COMPLETELY different game. Even the bulls only started winning when they got top players to build around jordan. Everton will probably never have enough money to build a team that will become a contender.
All I'm saying is that its more helpful to American Soccer to have Donovan be the top player on the MLS Cup winning team rather than having Donovan be a good player on an EPL club that will always be a mid level team.
The funny thing is, it only takes one Euro team with the vision to buy the top American players at (relatively speaking) bargain-basement prices. How much would a team like Everton have to pony up for players like LD, Beas, Boca, Ruiz, etc.? They could buy probably the top 5 from MLS right now, pay less than they would for one young Euro stud, and get a much bigger impact. Think any teams would have the cajones to do that? Might be instant improvement for a team like Everton that doesn't have Chelski-like money, and it wouldn't break the bank.
LOL @ whirl wind. They only looked "talentless" because Jordan was a ball hog. I'm sure Jordan absolutely HATED having the leagues #1 rebounder, Rodman on his team. Why on earth would Jordan ever want to have 2 shots for the price of 1??
It now seems that the Everton front-office is in full denial about this potential move, so this rumor may have been a bit premature. -G
LOL @ pork rind. If a roster full of MLS players could immediately turn a mid level EPL team into a contender, dont you think it would be EPL guys who would be wanting to play in the MLS, & not the other way around?? Besides, why do people still think that MLS should act as a minor league feeder system? The Japanese Pro Baseball League has GREATLY suffered for sending its top players like Ichiro & Matsui overseas. Sending the top MLS players to england can ONLY hurt the MLS.
"Sending the top MLS players to england can ONLY hurt the MLS." exactly right, i don't know why people keep calling for donovan to go overseas, i would rather watch him in MY FAVORITE LEAGUE...ya, he goes to england, if he even plays i never get to see if, minus 2-3 games on FSW...3 of my top favorite players of all-time went overseas and while i see Friedel and Howard (not every week like i did in MLS), i never see any of tony sanneh's matches...i wish he was still in MLS or came back... anyways, i want MLS to be one of the top 5 leagues in the world, filled with the best americans and mixed of young to top quality internationals... so people want MLS to stay like it is now cuz they feel like they are part of an elite group, which is cool, i like that I know a bunch of people and i have easy access to things happening inside the league, which if it was bigtime i probably wouldn't, but i'de rather watch the top american players in MLS than have them sit overseas or even if they are playing and doing awesome, ala Tim Howard, he was just as good in MLS...
It's great if Landon were to stay here... but what you're saying is that he needs to wait until he needs to wait until one of the giants like Man U, Arsenal, Bayern, Real, Milan, etc. come calling? As I said before, there's no way of knowing - if Landon were to someday go to one of those massive teams which can buy and develop the best talent - that he would be starting and making a definite impact on a regular basis. I agree he should stay in MLS as long as he wants, because Quakes would never drop him to the bench. But if there is a situation in Europe where a half-decent team tells him up front that he will be playing fairly regularly... then he ought to consider that option.
Man Utd took a risk with Timmy Howard, & look how it paid off for them. It may be a risk for a big team like Man Utd. to get Landon, but it may work out for them the way Timmy Howard did. The bottom line is its better for US soccer for Landon play for a great MLS team like San Jose, rather than a mediocre EPL team like Everton.
I wonder how you came by your expertise on the Japanese Pro Baseball League. Or whether, in actuality, you're completely full of s***.
Why is everyone so insecure & paranoid on this forum?? Superdave- you SERIOUSLY have to get a life & stop stalking me. Here: http://www.fpcj.jp/e/shiryo/jb/0312.html Alongside the excitement, there is also a growing sense of crisis that Matsui's departure will accelerate the declining popularity of Japanese professional baseball. Soccer has proven that it has arrived on the scene to stay, as demonstrated by the formation of the J. League in 1993, the appearances of the Japanese national team in consecutive World Cups, and the co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup by Japan and South Korea. In addition, the power and speed of Major League baseball have won over Japanese fans since games began to be broadcast in Japan via satellite following Nomo's entrance into the Major Leagues in 1995. After the success of Nomo, one Japanese baseball player after another has decided to try his skill against the best in the world, and the Major Leagues have begun to seem closer to home to many Japanese. Meanwhile, the foundation of Japanese professional baseball continues to weaken. A number of observers are voicing fears that the departure of Matsui, who has consistently been one of the most popular players, will bring about a hollowing of professional baseball in Japan.
