The high-pitched voice guy (Ralph) usually knocks soccer for lack of scoring. But maybe he's trying to show a "new understanding" of the game, or jump on the bandwagon a little bit. I think what was important to him is that there is a reasonable number of "close chances". I think before the pitcher's duel analogy he was talking about how exciting it was to watch the "close chance" hilites of the Premier League. So I think what it boils down to, and I think Landon agreed in some way, is that you need to at least have good, exciting chances in a match. If it doesn't even get that far, it won't be very exciting. If you do have those, it can be a fairly exciting game even if 0-0 or 1-0. I think that's probably a fair assessment. Would it be an exciting baseball pitcher's duel if neither team got close to scoring? Not really, but baseball has an advantage that you keep playing until someone scores. That could make it more exciting when they bring in relief pitchers who aren't as dominant. At the same time, if both teams completely struggle for another 5 innings, it could just turn out to be a dreadful marathon.
Re: Landon Donovan on KNBR 680/1050 AM now (4:28 PM PST or so...) Ralph & Tom treat everyone this way, primarily Ralph.
