I'm wondering if this is a test balloon to see if there's much pushback from the fan base. I would welcome this news with open arms, BUT - if he leaves to go to either of the SoCal clubs, he has to buy out his own contract. https://abc30.com/sports/usmnt-grea...-finalists-to-take-over-san-jose-ea/12044018/
What were we just saying about great players not necessarily being great coaches? I'd actually be OK with it if he really got the job because he impressed and showed above the rest. He'd be respected and the team would presumably play some kind of reasonable attacking style and I get the sense that he's not a softie - he demands a lot from the players (just the impression I got watching a few clips of him talking to his players).
Interesting but I can't imagine this happening as many Quakes fans that have been around longer than I have call him a traitor. With attendance already as low as it is I can't imagine they'd want to piss off long time Quakes fans who hold this view.
As a season ticket holder since 1996 I would welcome the move , bringing back someone from the albeit short glory days of the franchise , I think Landon could work and i would expect he would have some assurances from ownership regarding a more robust budget for player signings before he would ever agree to take the job . He doesn't strike me as someone who wants to get involved in a situation that is doomed to fail from the get go.
My hope is that the front office would see that, while vocal, that group is quite small and with very little influence over things like attendance. If Landon were to come back as coach, I could see an immediate bump in attendance. Then they would just have to win
That's a good point. Landon is the biggest name in US soccer so he would certainly bring in new fans.
Interesting that three coaches that have been rumored @ being interview are/were USL coaches. Ian Russel Donovan Pa-modify Kah Not sure what that says or doesn’t say… Covelo is #4 So who are #5 and #6?
"Donovan's all-time record with the Loyal is 30-23-15. He led San Diego to the playoffs last season, where they lost in the first round to San Antonio FC." Sounds perfect. As long as Kristen doesn't get cramps.
Donovan and Mexican fans made peace. If that can happen, anything is possible. In general, we would be best served putting all the dumb MLS 1.0 stuff well behind us. Old MLS is just poison in the well. I have no idea if he'd be any good as a manager. Grabbing a few headlines and energizing the the area soccer fans would be nice though.
Has Ian even been rumored to have been interviewed? I know there are supporters here, but any actually rumors of an interview? Also that tweet says there are 5 or 6 finalists. We don't know how many were interviewed. Or maybe everyone is a "finalist" .
This is not something I knew that I wanted but now I do just for the spectacle, alone. I've long given up the idea that the Quakes will ever be a good team, so now it's just about finding fun where you can, and Donovan becoming the full-time coach would be a heck of a lot of fun. I don't really have anything to say about his coaching style as I've never watched a team he's coached, but I can't say that I'd be sorry to see Covelo go. He seems like a nice enough guy and I don't yearn for his failure, but the idea of Donovan coaching in San Jose is just too good. And if fans have a problem with Donovan for not returning to San Jose when he was a player, well, they'll have to get over it or give up being a Quakes fan, I guess. There's a lot to dislike about Donovan, but holding a grudge against him for doing what he thought was best for his career is something that only the insanity of fandom can generate.
How are being a fan and screaming “fire the coach” inherently incompatible? I don’t have to get over anything, and neither does anyone else. Grudges are good (I’ve been working on nurturing them because I’m bad at keeping them). That said, I would be okay with hiring Donovan.
The more I think about it, the more I like Donovan for manager. What a legend. No guarantee it works, but if it does it would be incredible.
Sounds like something the Oakland Raiders use to do, hire some name from the past hoping it appeases the fans........but in the long run it's a setback/disaster. Plus after a year or two he would leave to coach the Galaxy.
