lab99's 2003 Fantasy League

Hi Everybody,
It's almost that time of year and I will be running a WUSA Fantasy League again this season.

Anyone who would like to participate needs to send me an e-mail at admin@heybub.net with a ranking of the DRAFT DATES that you can attend with the first date on your list being the one you would most like to attend and the last being the one you would least like to attend. I will take folks on a first come, first served basis along with their ability to attend (on Big Soccer) the player draft. I would like to have 4 Groups, but will take a 5th group if there is enough interested. There was also a rogue league or two last season that competed and tallied their own scores, but were not eligible for the Final Four. So folks can always do that too.

Anyway, you can go to my website at www.heybub.net and click on the Fantasy League link for new scoring and rules. The big changes are head-to-head competition among teams in a group with the best W-L-D record deciding the winner of each group. Each roster can have a total of 15 players - up from 13 last season. Also, in an effort to equalize the value of each position, I have added two new scoring categories. NULL = a defender can earn 2 points for each half that she plays a minimum of 20 minutes without her team being scored against; a midfielder earns 1 point. 1GOAL = a defender can earn 1 point for a game in which she played some portion of both halves and her team was not scored against; a midfielder can earn a .5 point. The GOAL category has been altered as well: a goal by a forward is worth 5 points, a midfielder 6 points, and a defender 7 points. Some other categories were removed, such as Game Started and Game Winning Goal and Game Winning Assist. The point award of a few other categories were changed too, so you might want to take a look at the Scoring link on my site.

The list of eligible Draft players is on my site and I will e-mail an Excel spreadsheet to anyone that wishes. This list may change prior to the draft if players are released, traded or acquired, so keep an eye out. Also, each player can only be designated in one position this season as a result of the changes to scoring. In some instances, I had to place them in a position when their WUSA Team's website did not make a distinction. It will be your responsibility to know who is available and in what position they have been placed based on MY DRAFT LIST.

The DRAFT DATES are as follows:

Saturday, March 15 at 10 AM Pacific
Sunday, March 16 at 10 AM Pacific
Monday, March 17 at 7 PM Pacific
Tuesday, March 18 at 6 PM Pacific
Wednesday, March 19 at 6 PM Pacific

Please set aside 3 hours to complete the draft, although it should take substantially less time than that if everyone is ready and prepared. A rule that you should all be aware of: each team owner will have a maximum of 2 minutes to make their selection. I assume that most people will make their selection quickly, but will have a max of 2 minutes. If a selection has not been made in that time (as determined by me and the Big Soccer clock), their turn will be skipped. They will have an opportunity to immediately make their selection after the next owner has selected. If they don't, the round will progress in the same fashion until it reaches the absentee owner's legitimate next turn. At that point, if the owner does not make their selection within 2 minutes, I will either appoint a proxy to fill-in for them or give their team over to anyone waiting in the wings who may have missed out on a chance to play. I want folks to take their commitment to the draft seriously because you are making a commitment to all the other players in your group and to me that you will not waste our time and that you will provide a fun and challenging game environment by choosing the most competitive team roster that you can.

You're fine Boro. You have your first choice, which I think was Saturday. I believe Shawn and Lauren are the only folks that haven't sent their date in yet. As soon as I have the final player, I will draw the draft order and post it here - hopefully tonight.

On the day of your draft, I will put a thread up on BigSoccer in the Fan Clubs & More forum. Be there and ready to go at the starting time for your draft. Each team owner will have a MAXIMUM of 2 minutes from the BIg Soccer timestamp on the previous owner's selection to make their selection. But please make your selection as quickly as possible so that the draft doesn't necessarily have to take 3 hours (that is the amount of time it would take if each owner took the MAX time to make every one of their selections.). If you fail to make your selection within the time allotted, you will sacrifice your turn to the next team owner in the draft order. Once they have made their selection, you will be able to IMMEDIATELY make your skipped selection. Please note: you do NOT have 2 more minutes to make a selection. This will continue through one cycle of the draft order. The League Commissioner (that would be me) will announce if a team owner has sacrificed their selection position. Once the draft order has cycled back to the absentee team owner, the owner will have 2 minutes to make both of their selections before a standby player or the Commissioner/proxy takes control of the team selection. If the team is handed off to a standby player wishing to participate in the League, the absentee owner will have forfeit their team to the standby player. If the Commissioner/proxy takes control of the selection, the absentee owner may resume control of the team at any time. IF YOU SHOULD BE UNABLE TO ATTEND YOUR DRAFT, PLEASE PROVIDE A FRIEND OR THE COMISSIONER/PROXY WITH YOUR COMPLETE LIST OF DESIRED SELECTIONS IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE SO THAT THEY MAY DRAFT FOR YOU. There should be no ambiguity regarding which player you would like picked in which order to fill a complete 15-woman roster taking into account that many of your desired selections will be drafted by other players.

After your draft, you will have the remaining time prior to Friday, April 4 at 9 PM Pacific to conduct any trades and/or waivers/acquisitions that are approved by the Commissioner.

You can find a list of all the WUSA players and their positions as designated for this fantasy league, as well as the scoring format and all rules, on my website at www.heybub.net. Please make yourself familiar with the scoring, rules and player lists as well as the game schedule that can be found at the WUSA/Team websites prior to your draft. PLEASE NOTE: You will be playing in a head-to-head competition each week with a different team within your group. There are a number of weeks in the latter half of the season where a player's WUSA team will play more than one game in that week. Team owner's will earn points for any game in which their player appears during the week.
