To be fair, the last time they set a release clause for an amount that was merely crazy, someone went and paid it.

Release clauses are required by Spanish law. Otherwise they would just have no set release clause like most players in the PL.

Karl Hein will reportedly sign a new contract with an eye towards going on loan.

Shots fired by Ted in today's newsletter:

I feel like Kvara is a better player than Martinelli (though the likes of Scott Willis disagree). But the shot locations are terrible.

Also, there's this, which is objectively correct:

Leao is not worth big money, every time I watch him there's just something I don't like. He's Nelson on steroids.

Tierney just did his hammie(?) again! I heard. Ugh. How are chances of unloading him went way way down.

As in no chance. His career is effectively over. Some boxers have glass jaws, Tierney has glass hamstrings.

Ted changed my thinking about something. For a while I have felt the first team trainer is fairly disposable outside a few names. Ted has a different spin on it. tldr; there are way too few decent candidates and clubs wised up about hiring ex pros who don't know the modern styles they want to play ...

I mention this because the head coach job market went positively Freaky Friday this summer.

    [...]

So if you need to replace a coach nowadays, where do you go?

Some go to their academy systems, where you can de-risk the personality aspects at least and hire someone who “understands the club.” It doesn’t mean they’ll be great at the competitive league level, but you go in knowing something.

Others go out into the market every time and try to find the best coach that is available that they can also afford. Which is really difficult to do when every other team is doing the same thing and needs a new coach every two years.

And finally, a growing number of teams are scouring world football for anyone that is competent at playing most of the style of play they want to see on the pitch. Can these coaches handle a dressing room full of players with big egos? Who the hell knows. But from what we have seen on the coaching side, these hires have more success than the alternative hiring processes.

It reminds me of a Honigstein interview where he explained how the City front office had optimised the whole club around Pep ball before he even arrived. Arsenal now have a similar alignment, ditto Leverkusen.

Bayern have gone south - hiring elite managers who don't fit with the front office or the squad

I think I remember Mike L. Goodman once mentioning that the stats wonks aren't convinced Kvara could recreate his Napoli form in another league or even on another team.

In that podcast that Neville and Carragher do, they had Vieira on a week ago or so. Beyond the interesting stories with him and Keane providing their recollections of their confrontations, one of the more interesting things Vieira said about what he's learned from his managerial career so far is that figuring out what the "front office/decision maker" apparatus at the club is all about is more important than the current players, etc. You have to figure out immediately if they're people you can work with and are going to back you to succeed.

I don't think he can do it in Napoli either. Perfect alignment of players looking to prove something and the right coach at the right time.

The entire locker room and front office collapsed from success. Spalletti saw it coming.

The amount of ego and conflict in the team this year necessitates a clean sweep.

He still had 19 goal contributions this season. Which is obviously down from Napoli's title winning season, still had 25 back then. But it's not like he collapsed entirely from a statistical POV post-Spalletti.

Watts says that his wage demands could/would be problematic as they would make him one of our highest earners at 21yo.
